Survivor Tocantins Week 5extra - Play It Again, Jeff

Survivor Tocantins Week 5extra - Play It Again, Jeff

Next - a slide!

And if you're just tuning in, you missed it - Survivor was last night. Curse , Thank you NCAA. But you didn't miss much. It was a clip show. No challenges, no votes-offs, just some 'never before seen' (i.e. left on the cutting room floor) footage. So I'll try to give you the gist.

First off, a little seen-before footage as Jeff quickly recaps the action (sic) thus far:

We see very brief précis to the vote-offs of:
1) Beautiful but bossy Carolina
2) Athletic but contentious Candace
3) Competitive but crazy Sandy
4) Well liked but ailing Jerry
5) Sexually secretive Spencer

And along the way two idols found, and held by one big secret alliance.

Al least they returned all 16 survivors to the titles.

Day 1

We see the truck in and private interviews with a number of contestants - Sierra gets her lips blurred (is that a first?) to, I guess, protect the delicate sensibilities of lip readers as an epithet is bleeped.

I look for but fail to catch Coach 'directing people with his eyes."

Hilariously, Tyson describes Coach as looking like "the love child of Steven Seagal and the 'Last of the Mohicans' (meaning Daniel Day Lewis)". Got it in one, Tyson.

Stephen uses the same "Steven Seagal" simile in describing Coach and how screwed he thinks his tribe is, a prediction that certainly hasn't born out thus far.

Jeff's voiceover says Jalapao "stumbles out of the gate" and we see the J-tribers stopping to pore over the map and debate directions - but remember that Jalapao got to camp in daylight while Timbira stumbled in after dark, a fact that Jeff doesn't mention and the show doesn't reveal.

We see the early days when, without fire the tribes could not cook their rice or beans, and Timbira tries catching minnows. They catch a few minuscule one, one of which Debbie chews and swallows quickly. Tyson describes eating Jatoba root which "smells like feet". A lot of interesting faces made in this segment.

Day 7

Jalapao's fire is out and member after member tries to strike sparks from the flint, but no one succeeds until the model, Sydney does. She's spent some time outdoors in her girlhood. Stephen is impressed.

Tyson reveals more of his personality which includes a lot of parading around naked to especially Debbie's chagrin. Tyson and Debbie practice martial arts, and Tyson earns a mouth blur for "butt". Now honestly, it that outside the pale these days? Debbie and Tyson do a lot of clowning around. At one point Tyson says when he goes home he'll probably have to move somewhere else, somewhere "less Mormony."

Coach and Sierra tangle as Coach gives out assignments, and he's very specific about how he wants Sierra to do them. Coach says he was not being "condescending" but it sure looked that way. Later, however, he talks to her about how he was wanting her to push her limits and realize her potential. He seems to sell this to Sierra - she ends up sharing that she's coming around to see his point. It's exactly how a coach should work, as long as the people he interacts with want the coaching.

Jalapao shares how dirty their camp is and JT and Sydney come up with a plan to raise the platform of their shelter off the ground. JT mostly implements the plan, and deftly. Stephen sincerely offers to help and pitches in where he can.

Timbira: Brendan and Coach have a bench building contest in an alpha-male struggle, to the amusement of their tribe. Their "benches' end up looking more like swings.

Jalapao: Sandy and Taj share angst over the condition of their skin from the bites of "millions of bugs". Taj get emotional when she contemplates going home like this, and ends up getting a warm hug from Stephen.

Timbira: Brendan later shares that they 'don't need a coach', they just want to have fun.

Day 10

Timbira wakes up. In the night Coach startled everybody with a shout of "Snake!", which he says was a recurring nightmare from his kayaking in the Amazon days when a snake dropped from a tree and wrapped around his neck. But when Debbie finds a shed snake skin right next to the shelter, Coach says maybe he really did see a snake in the roof of the shelter, and the ladies are freaked. No snake is found, despite 'nature cuts' that make it appear they might have a snake in the roof.

Jalapao: JT and Joe play a little fungo with a stick and Jatoba seeds. JT hits one that draws grimaces from both. It looks like a couple of boys who just hit a window playing in the back yard - but we never see what he hit, although there is a scene where something plops in the water where Taj is resting.

Timbira: Coach conducts an imaginary symphony with a feather baton to Debbie and Erinn's amusement. But in private, Erinn denigrates Coach, calling him a "jackass" and "the biggest joke on the planet", and if these remarks are really reactions to the 'symphony', they don't seem very gracious. Both ladies clap and Debbie yells "Bravo" after the performance.

Day 13

Timbira: Coach and Tyson do some plotting apart from the tribe, and swear allegiance to each other. Coach wants Debbie out, Tyson favors keeping her around for a while.

Jalapao: Jeff begins this segment "While across the river at Jalapao..." I believe this is the first indication that the two tribes are on opposite sides of the river. I wonder if that's why Timbira took longer to get to camp? We've never seen either tribe crossing the river.

Stephen and JT confer and each talk privately of having formed a bond, and JT even says they want to go to final 3, or perhaps final 2 (if there is one) together. Stephen seems agreeable but is more reserved.

Later that day, though, Stephen is seduced by Brendan's offer of alliance at Exile Island. Stephen=fickle. He's also freaked a little when they find a shed snake skin themselves on Exile Island. (Wouldn't it be funny if Brendan is just carrying around the same snake skin and leaving it laying around to be found and unsettle tribe/alliance mates?)

Stephen is impressed by Brendan's fire making skills. Heck, Stephen is impressed if anybody can make fire. But their fire is quickly doused by a rainstorm and they end up sleeping spoon fashion in the cold rain. (Don't they have or can't they build shelter on Exile Island?) Being this close physically to a 'hunk of man' like Brendan is another eye-opener to the city-boy Stephen.

Stronger challenges. More intensity. Bigger rewards. Higher stakes.

Timbira turns on Coach.

Jalapao turns on each other.

(These are Jeff's words and probably deceptive, but we do see Stephen and JT discussing 'getting rid of Taj'.)

Back to Thursday, next week, see you on April 2!
