Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites - Week 13: Like Clubbing a Baby Seal

13.jpg...................................................... ............................................................................................................................................... ............................................................................................................................................... .........Just gimme a minute...................................................................................................... .............................................................................................................................................. ................ ................ ................Alright. Maybe there's-- I mean-- because who would-- why would he.....? ................ ............... ............... While last week I only wrote a little bit because I didn't have the time, after 45 minutes of this week's episode I didn't think I'd have much to write about simply because of the obviousness of the episode. I thought, "Alright, they're gunning for Erik, Erik and Natalie make a pact, Erik is defeated by boobs, makes the wrong alliance, but manages to win immunity so Natalie goes home. I thought that was all I was going to have to work with. BUT THEN, something insane happened.

I'm not going to summarize the rest of the episode any more than I just did, because ultimately, none of it matters. Just know that the Amanda, Parvati, Cirie alliance is going strong. Once Erik won immunity by a pretty decent margin, had the top four in the bag. He's had a target on or around his back for the last eight weeks or so, and yet somehow he was still there and was still safe for the final four. Until everyone remembered that he's a complete moron.

While the girls were huddled around, it was suggested that Natalie try and convince Erik to give her his immunity. She didn't understand the angle and asked, logically, "Why would he do that?" She couldn't understand, because she hadn't been raised ON THE MOON IN A CAVE UNDER A ROCK WITH EAR MUFFS AND BLINDERS ON! Amanda, Cirie, and Parvati told her to say how he lost everyone's trust and how it would restore their faith in him for the jury. Then they said to tell him that Cirie and Natalie would vote Amanda out if he did this for them as a sign of trust. Natalie hesitated, which shows how ridiculous the plan was, since she's the next one to be voted out if Erik doesn't go for it. Even with her ass on the line she was like, "That's absurd." But she eventually decides to try for it...

While catching Erik alone, Natalie makes the pitch and initially, Erik doubts the idea. Then, Natalie appeals to the side of him that just wants to be liked by the favorites. She says that he's pissed off a lot of the jury (I guess), and that by giving Natalie the idol, he will show them that he can be trusted and do a good thing. The hook comes when Natalie explains that Cirie will vote for Amanda and they can vote her out since she will be tough to beat in the final 2. Erik ponders this, and after some great cajoling by Cirie (who pulls out explanations and evidence out of nowhere), Erik asks if they can vote out Parvati instead. It's important to note that his explanation for this is, "Parvati might have found the immunity idol at Exile and given it to Amanda..." which shows that a) he's not a great thinker and would rather bank on a decision with TWO "mights" than one and b) Erik clearly thinks everyone is giving away immunity left and right. So he's in the correct mindset. Cirie agrees all too readily, because why not, Erik suddenly feels like this is on HIS terms, and they go to tribal.

Some really good partisan acting at tribal council leads everyone to reiterate their points about Erik not being trustworthy. They say actions speak louder than words, and it's true, because Erik can't possibly have the words necessary to fully explain his stupidity. Instead, he gives Natalie the idol and EVERYONE bursts into laughter. Cirie's laughing, James is in tears on the jury, Ozzy, Jason, Amanda, and even NATALIE is laughing. The producers make a great executive decision to show EVERY vote just to drive home the punchline. With his fingers doubly-crossed, Erik is voted out and everyone explodes into laughter. "My reign as the stupidest survivor ever has ended!" James announces as Erik trots away into the jungle, where he will probably be taken down by some large creature and devoured.

And while Erik is definitely the worst ever, of all time, in the history of thinking, I think it should be noted that everyone missed a very good play here. Everyone keeps saying again and again that Amanda is going to be difficult to beat if she makes it to the end. So, wouldn't the ultimate blindside have been to play the game about Erik and Natalie, and then ultimately VOTE FOR AMANDA like they said? Amanda would NEVER have seen it coming, she would have been sent home, and everyone remaining would have a better chance at 1 million dollars. The other thing that Erik might have wanted to remember, is that THERE IS MONEY FOR 2nd PLACE! If one of his primary reasons for giving away the immunity was to get jury votes, then he should have thought about how far he'd gotten and how you can worry about jury votes when you get to the final two. "I was playing the game" is ALWAYS a valid argument that people begrudgingly accept. Worst case scenario, he comes in second and gets a lot of money anyway.

Could we have a game of Survivor where everyone's over thirty years old and has been around the block at least twice?

The almost felt like child abuse.
