Supernatural: Finale preview + some predictions

Ackles-Padalecki.jpgSo tonight is the finale... and next year is possibly the final season.

We seem to be pretty far down the road to the Apocalypse. Could they try to string out the hunt for Lilith? I don't think so, and not just because of the well known Ausiello spoiler. It's just too much. They've been hunting for her going on 2 years, they need something new.

But what?

I would say I wish I knew, but I don't. I'd rather be surprised.

One thing I think may happen though, is Sam becoming possessed by Lucifer.

Yeah, I know he has that bad-ass tattoo, and we've done the Winchester possession thing... what, twice now? But Lucifer is an angel, though, remember? A fallen one, but still an angel. And angels have to have a vessel, either born into one, like Anna, or possessed, like Castiel. (Plus, remember that Rule of 3s thing I go on about sometimes.)

So my theory is that Sam was being groomed to be the leader of YED's demon army, but he was also being groomed to become Lucifer's vessel. Lucifer is just so evil that he can't take over just any human body, because the evil would destroy it. And why would he want to have just any human? He's the destined Ruler of Hell, it seems he would want a body that is symbolic - the body of one of the legendary hunters.

Possible Season 5 mytharc?

So that's my theory. And if it's right, Season 5 could go like this: Lucifer possesses Sam, but the possession isn't quite complete. Lucifer didn't count on Sam becoming stronger, or Lucifer is weakened from being out of body for so many years. So Lucifer is constantly warring within Sam.

Dean, of course, can't kill Sam. He thinks he can still save him. Sam's battle with Lucifer shows Dean that Sam can be saved, so he has to try. And the way to save him is to destroy Lucifer's Grace.

It's not that simple, though. Now all the angels want to kill Sam to destroy Lucifer's vessel and send Lucifer back to .... well, wherever.

And demons will be searching for Sam, because they want to kill Dean, and take Sam to Lucifer's Grace, so Lucifer can reclaim it.

So Dean has to hide Sam from everybody, while at the same time looking for clues to where the Grace is, and also watching Sam's slow, horrible transformation into the Prince of Darkness (no, not Ozzie Osbourne, the original Prince of Darkness, Lucifer).

It also gives Bobby a graceful exit from the show. Of course, the Winchesters can't contact Bobby until Lucifer is banished, or Bobby will be endangered. So they'll get clues by voicemail, email, or whatever, that allows Jim Beaver to work on his other projects while keeping Bobby's character alive for an emotional series finale reunion.

Could it work? Would it be interesting? I think so. It would be similar to how the show started out, with John leaving cryptic messages, and the brothers going to rendevous points. It's also similar to The Fugitive TV series, which was pretty successful.

Other possibilities

Of course there may be a nearly infinite number of other ways it could happen. Lucifer could be released, and the next year could be the search for his vessel before he gains his full powers. Or Lucifer could take over Ruby's vessel (and improve the acting) and Season 5 would be about the race to find Lucifer's Grace. Or maybe it's Castiel, or Anna, or... Bobby? Dang it, not Bobby!

Anyway, it will sure be a lot of fun. And for us fans, maybe a little sad, though maybe next year isn't the end of the series after all. I haven't heard anything about extending it, but I know you should never say never.

What do you think? Am I off base, crazy, right on, drunk? Let me know, or feel free to talk about tonights episode in the comments.

I'll be back tomorrow with a recap.

Truthfully? Your scenario about Sam turning into Lucifer sound awful. Sorry but I really don't need an redux of season 1-3, will Sam turn evil? Will Dean have to save him or kill him? Sam whining once again that he is doomed? Oh hell no. I will give up this show faster than it takes me to drop any other bad show. And that would be bad.

I'm hoping that Lucifer doesn't need a vessel, but will need his grace to become strong and powerful. The boys will have time to reconcile and work together in stopping Lucifer from "becoming".

Sam will realize what a dumbass he's been and maybe we'll get the real story behind all this, how Sam finally learns to appreciate his brother Dean.

Sounds better to me than Dean vs SuperSam.

i just got done wachin the season finalie and it whas awsome i love whits show idc wus happends as long as they keep doing the show (sam's kinda a duchebag though)

Sam is not a duchbag, Ruby used him.
Anyway, probably they will go together to find Lucifer's Grace.
It will be hard though, with all the demons behind them, but they now have Castiel's help. So it would be easier. And Sam probably will lose his power, coz he won't drink blood anymore.
But Sam and Dean must be together as brothers, the show is not great otherwise.

@stelladore, that's a good point. We don't need a rehash of the last couple of seasons.

So I'm beginning to think you're right. Check out Friday's post for an update.

I don't know.....maybe the Sam possesion wouldn't be so bad if they did it right. And not for the whole season, just the last bit, so you have some climax. And only the series fanlie. Here's what I'm thinking:

Instead of struggling against Lucifer and hiding Sam away from demons and angels, Lucifer could take him over. The demons could already have Sam. Of course, that wouldn't last long. Sam could be hiding deep inside and trying to get free, making Lucifer use some of his energy shutting Sam up. Lucifer would want him gone and would do every possible thing to depress Sam, trying to make him think it isn't worth it. Make him give up. Meanwhile Dean's working for the angels and thinks that Sam is already gone, so he's on board with the killing thing. True, he's a little sad and damn angry, but he'll still do it. In the end Dean would try and kill Lucifer, Lucifer would end up nearly killing Dean, Sam would get fed up with watching this and fight, win, but die along with Lucier. Come on, Dean's died enough, its Sam's turn.

I don't know what the real season would be like, but I think that if Lucifer did take over Sam, thats how they should do it.
