Supernatural: No Rest for the Wicked

wicked.jpgSo Dean is dead and in Hell.

That surprised me.

Maybe it shouldn't. They killed Sam at the end of Season 2. No reason to take it easy on Dean. But last year was different. Last year we knew Sam survived, though it put Dean in a world of hurt. There was closure on the season's arc, and the set up of a new arc for Season 3.

This didn't feel like closure. This felt like it should have been the next to last episode, not the finale. Dean is dead. He's in Hell. No one leaves Hell without either becoming a demon (and even then it's not easy) or being released through a Devil's Gate.

So what is Season 4 going to be about? Getting Dean out of Hell? I doubt it. This series works on the interaction of the Winchester brothers. If Dean is stuck in Hell through all, or even most, of next season, it's just not going to be the same. Watching Dean get tortured while Sam oozes angst and grief will get old pretty quick.

So I expect next year's premiere will get Dean out of Hell by the end of the episode. From there? I just don't know. Will Sam kill Lilith, erasing Dean's bargain? Will he find another Devil's Gate (I doubt this, Dean coming back as just a soul won't make very compelling viewing). I guess we'll find out in September.

Bad seed

Creepy kids are extra creepy. Everyone remembers "The Bad Seed," and "The Omen". I thought this depiction was pretty good,(and grimly funny, because the torture was pretty unique. Cake, and a party, every day for dinner. Reading the same story 27 times in a row. These are the kinds of tortures you can understand if you've ever been a parent.

There were some fun wrinkles in this episode. The Holy Water in the sprinkler was one of them. I was wondering what Bobby was up to with that. So far, we've had John make Holy Water in a fire sprinkler, the brothers make Holy Water in a toilet in jail, and Bobby make Holy Water in a lawn sprinkler. All similar, but different enough so that you can believe they are the type of ingenuity you would have to show to be a hunter.

Having Ruby become possessed by Lilith was also a neat plot twist, and it took me a bit to figure it out. I kept wondering if one of the other trapped adults would end up being possessed, and how they would explain Dean not seeing the demon inside. I also wondered whether Bobby would be possessed. So it dawned on me - right about the time Ruby asked for the knife - that Ruby was now Lilith.

Speaking of Bobby, where is he? Hopefully, Ruby didn't kill him first.

Unanswered questions

I loved the episode. It was very creepy and it kept your attention to the end. But the most disappointing thing, to me, was the fact that no questions were answered.

How did Mary know the YED? Why did the brothers' eyes bleed? And Sam.... what exactly is he, and what can he really do?

Hate that we have to wait until September to see if these questions even begin to be answered. But at least there will be a Supernatural in September. I guess 4 months isn't that long to wait.

I LOVED these episode!!!. The thing that happened to me with the strike and all the other shows, is that when they came back were sooo much better that they were in the first place, and with my favorite show ever... didn´t make the same impact to me (and the pre strike episodes, for me were true gold...). But these episode finally step up, and did exactly what i was so afraid... they kill dean!!! and they give him such a gory death!!!... it really shocked me. Even in some level one coud expect that he woud die (and the spoilers were going to that direction) is completly diferent see it with my own eyes...
The thing that makes me more sad, is the fact that even if dean does return (obliously he will... even when kripke was jocking in interviews that jensen was out and that Chad Michael Murray was going to replaice him in the 4th season) now we know for sure that he will never have a happy ending, and will continued to be the eternal martir in the plot, sure, he can go to heaven, but will never LIVE a normal life, never had a chilhood... and now these!!!.... is just so sad destiny for such a great character, but hell, maybe that is what makes dean so great after all.

I really think that dean isn't actually in hell (kripke said that he woudn't do hell because with they budget they coundn't make it justice), so im going with purgatory or a limbo like. But if we see it like hell (it actually looked like he was been already tortured...) could be nice to see ruby (because i think that she will end up in the same place that dean is right now)try to escape with Dean. Just a thoght... :)

Good point, it really could be purgatory or limbo, and I hadn't even thought about Ruby. That would probably change Dean's opinion of her if she helped him escape.... maybe, LOL.

And I agree, I think there are probably no 100% happy endings for the characters in Supernatural. The best we can hope for is that the brothers can live with some little bit of normalcy when this is all over.

The ONLY way I see to get out of this mess, is to utilize the Norse demi-god whom the boys have battled on a couple occassions. He's basically Loki, the norse god of mischief. He can rewrite reality to suit himself. Any deal with another demon will only result in more of the same problems. Any other suggestions?

Well, before the news today, I would have said Ruby might have been able to help. Of course, Krip has already said the Hell/Limbo/Purgatory scenes will take place off camera, so we may find out that Ruby sacrificed herself to help Dean out of where ever he is. That could be part of what haunts him through Season 4.
