Impressions
Back to the longer term storyline! Excellent episode, great setup for the final few episodes.
Critique
Strong episode. Nice characterization at work here. Little bits work in here and there that reveal Dean's desire for the family to be together, and Sam's desire for a normal life. This will surely come into play later in the series, as the demon they are hunting will certainly try to use it against them.
This marks the reappearance of Meg, the hitch-hiker Sam met in "Scarecrow", who is apparently on a break from her trip to California. She makes an excellent foil for the brothers, playing the part with a nice mix of sexiness and arrogance.
Also marks the reappearance of John Winchester. I'll have more to say on his possible fate on Wednesday night, when I'll be making my predictions for the series and the season.
Trivia
TV.com shows this episode as written by Eric Kripke, the series creator. IMDB shows it as Trey Callaway. Either way, it shows in this episode that Kripke's got a strong idea of where he wants to go with the show.
Directed by Kim Manners. He hasn't directed my favorite episodes, but he stepped it up with this one. He's also credited on IMDB with directing the season premiere this week. (thanks to JM for pointing out that Kim is a man.)
Wikipedia has info on divs or daevas, the monster in this episode. Sounds like the writers made a few changes to the legend.
Thanks! I completely missed that. It's fixed now.

Hey! Just wanted to point out that Kim Manners is a guy, just in case you wanted to edit that. :)
