Tonight's episode of Studio 60 picks up shortly after last week's left off. The titular wrap party follows the episode of the show-within-a-show that Lauren Graham just hosted.
Wikipedia's description: "A drunken Jordan makes friends with the cast during an after-show party, Danny tries to get Matt's mind off Harriet with the help of three sexy women, Simon makes a plea to hire more black writers and Cal deals with a mysterious man backstage (guest star Eli Wallach)."
A drunk Jordan? Doesn't she have an alcohol problem? Can't bode well!
Unfortunately, your humble and faithful reviewer can't really do his job tonight. Fortunately, he has a heck of an excuse: Anya Haley Friedman was born October 19th to proud parents Lex (that's me!) and my wife Lauren, and we just came home from the hospital today. I'll endeavor to write a full recap and review of the episode (which, in fact, I haven't yet seen) sometime Tuesday, but I can't make a promise.
For now, please feel free to discuss/review this episode below in the comments. NBC seems to be getting a bit panicky about this show, and the mainstream press (including USA Today) has published complaints about the series thus far. Sound off on the latest installment!
I just started watching this show a few weeks ago and I thought Danny had the alcohol problem. I can understand the network's panic. This show is just like West Wing and Sports Night. Devoted fans of Sorkin will like it but it needs to find an audience beyond that.
And congratulations from CrabAppleLane.
-- Posted by: Rob at October 24, 2006 07:19 AMMaybe it's because I am comparing it to the level of the West wing (my favorite show of all time), but up to till now the show has not grabbed me and made it a "stop everything and watch" show. I still think they are under utilizing Bradely Whitford's character. Just in general, I am not emotionally involved with the characters enough to really get into the show. The Harriot/Matt situation is not interesting at all and it seems Eli Wallach was a nice touch, great actor indeed.
-- Posted by: Matt at October 24, 2006 11:04 AMCongratulations Lex and Lauren and welcome to our wild, wacky and wonderful world Anya Haley!
About the show - I was a rabid fan for the first few episodes and still wouldn't miss it because I love a lot of the dialogue and the behind-the-scenes stuff BUT - it's waaaaaay too preachy and sending-a-message in a very heavy handed way. There were moments where it felt like an afterschool special.
If they give the audience enough credit to hang on to the Clifford Odets references then they should assume that we'd get the message without over-explaining everything.
That was my feeling about last week's show and this one again. There was so much great stuff there and so many good storylines they really didn't have to hit the audience over the head with "the message", "the story" and "the issue". Again - Sorkin you should know better.
Show baby - Show don't tell.

I've watched all of Studio 60 and I liked, no loved, this one best! I got big tears in my eyes in the scenes with Eli Walich- so poignant. And I can't say enough about your dealing with race. I'm a 55 year old high school guidance counselor in an urban public school. I've also been married to a Black teacher for 30 years and we're the parents of two terrific mixed kids. The message was one that we've tried to give to both our own kids and the young men at our school. Thanks for a great show!
