The Office: The Convention

”office-convention.jpg"So Michael not only watches Oprah; he is inspired by her -- well actually he is inspired by Angelina Jolie. He expresses interest in adopting a Chinese baby, until he finds out that it can be $1,000 just to apply for the adoption. Instead, he makes a deal with Pam that if neither of them has a baby in 30 years (he originally hoped for 10 or 20), they will have one together.

Adoptions aside, the episode actually revolves around Michael going to Philadelphia for the Northeastern Mid-Market Office Supply Convention. Angela is sad that Dwight is going with Michael. She is so sad that she actually follows him there.

Also, Pam has her first date since Roy. It's not with Jim, but with Alan, a cartoonist from the local paper. She is nervous, and Kellie's remark about the way she is dressed didn't exactly help. Toby, upon finding out that Pam is already back out there, seems to want to ask her out. I wonder where that will go in future episodes, if anywhere.

During the lunch break, Creed informs Meredith that Angela is the "office bitch," completely unaware that Meredith has worked in the office for quite some time. Despite his feelings, however, he has no problem eating Angela's leftovers.

Back at the convention, Michael and Dwight run into Jim, who misses all of the pranks he used to play on Dwight. In fact, he wants to find out how to get a copy of Dwight's room key.

He probably doesn't need a key, since Dwight and Michael are establishing a party room, complete with liquor and dartboard. But first, he needs to hit the floor to collect convention swag -- apparently he decorates his home with it.

Special guest star alert: Jerome Bettis is at the convention signing autographs. Michael invites him back to their room for a party. He looks frightened. Dwight asks why they call him "The Bus." Of course, Michael says it's because "he's afraid to fly."

Michael invites Jim, Josh and Jan to his party. Jan says that everyone is in meetings and "I can't stay on top of you 24/7." Michael's look is priceless.

Back at the office, Phyllis advises Pam to order the most expensive thing on the menu while on her date. Stanley tells her she will have to "put out." Phyllis agrees (so do I).

Despite his goofy demeanor, cocktails helped Michael nail a deal with Hammermill, one of the largest paper manufacturers in the world. Jan says she underestimates Michael. Michael asks that in the future, she please "estimate" him.

Jim finally gets the key to Dwight's room, only to walk in on Angela -- and mistakes her for a hooker.

Pam and Alan share a double date with Kellie and Ryan. Why is Ryan still torturing Kellie? Or vice versa? She spends the night feeding him and hugging on him. Pam, however, catches Alan checking out her rack and decides there probably won't be a second date.

The night is drawing towards a close, so Jim heads back to Michael's room only to find Michael sitting in the dark -- well, except for the techno music and a strobe light. The two have a drink together. Michael seems offended that Jim transferred, although Jim informs him that his transfer is -- as we all know -- because of Pam.

The very end finds Michael and Dwight turning on a black light in their room to find many stains. Michael hopes they are urine (versus semen). Which would you choose? -- Rachel Cericola

I thought this was a better ep than the season premiere. Michael was in fine form at the convention, but I swear sometimes he is just so sad he makes me want to cry!

I made a quiz for this episode. Check it out if you've got a couple of minutes to spare. :D

About Pam and Toby: In The Fire when they are all outside and a few of the women are talking about which men are cute, Pam first says that Oscar is kind of cute, then brings up Toby with some enthusiasm. I personally think something is gonna happen, but who knows?
