Office Fodder

"Earl" & "The Office" Get Renewed

office_dwight2.jpgSome were worried about moving comedies "My Name is Earl" and "The Office" into the previously coveted must-see lineup. It seems to be paying off for everyone. TV Week says that NBC has given the thumbs up to both shows for the 2006-2007 season.

The Jason Lee vehicle, "My Name is Earl," has shown promise from the beginning. "The Office" has definitely benefited from being paired with the freshman comedy, as well as star Steve Carell's rocketing success. "The Office" recently received it's highest ratings yet, which is being credited to its recent availability on iTunes.

If you're as hooked as I am, expect some sadness as "The Office" ends its season a bit earlier on March 30. No worries. Carell needs to shoot another movie, so they are filling the slot with "Teachers," a new single-camera comedy from James Burrows ("Taxi," "Cheers").

Piggybacking on the success of their timeslot shifting, NBC is planning to make some other changes. "The Apprentice" is no longer must-see, so it's moving to Mondays beginning February 27. It always seemed sort of awkward in that Thursday block. It will be paired with the Howie Mandel helmed game show "Deal or No Deal."

"Law & Order" is being shifted to one hour earlier on Wednesdays, in hopes to take some of the steam out of juggernaut "Lost." It also leaves an opening for the new Doug Liman ("Mr. & Mrs. Smith") drama, "Heist." It's also bumping Monday night regular "Las Vegas" to Fridays at 9:00 p.m. (EST) It will have good company with Dick Wolf's new "Law & Order"-ish series "Conviction." -- Rachel Cericola
