Mad Men Fodder

AMC's "Mad Men" Returns in August!

With the 3rd season premiere of AMC's Mad Men on Sunday, August 16th looming large, what can we expect this season? 16 Emmy Nominations for starters.

Welcome to the premiere posting of the new Mad Men Fodder blog page. I will be posting weekly reviews and recaps of the critically acclaimed AMC show as well as news and thoughts on this ground breaking show (better late than never, right?)

The 2009 Primetime Emmy Award nominations were announced last week and the show snagged 16 nominations which is the most of any drama series on television. The 61st Primetime Emmy Awards will be televised on Sunday, September 20th at 8PM on CBS and is hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.

Congratulations to creator Matthew Weiner, Jon Hamm, John Slattery, Elizabeth Moss and all the cast and crew of Mad Men! I was extremely happy with all the noms but definitely thought January Jones, Christina Hendricks and Vincent Kartheiser were very deserving as well. Oh well, maybe next year?

Here's a partial list of the nominations including four nominations for Outstanding Writing:

* Outstanding Drama Series

* Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Jon Hamm as Don Draper

* Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson

* Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
John Slattery as Roger Sterling

* Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series
"A Night to Remember"
Robin Veith, Writer
Matthew Weiner, Writer

* "Six Month Leave"
Andre Jacquemetton, Writer
Maria Jacquemetton, Writer
Matthew Weiner, Writer

* "The Jet Set"
Matthew Weiner, Writer

* "Meditations in an Emergency"
Kater Gordon, Writer
Matthew Weiner, Writer

The show also received Emmy nominations for Art Direction, Casting, Cinematography, Costumes, Makeup, Hairstyling, Directing and Editing. Click here for the full list.

When we last saw the guys and gals of Sterling Cooper there was lots of turmoil. According to Matthew Weiner the new season has a time jump like the gap between the 1st and 2nd seasons. In a recent interview with GQ, Weiner does not give away much but he does say: "Time has passed. I won't say how much, but the guys are definitely at different points in their lives." "This season will be thematically different than what we've done before, but it's the same people in the same world. Pete is there. Peggy is there. I want people who love the show to say, 'Oh, my gosh, I'm so glad to be back with these people. What's going to happen?' "

He also questions AMC's decision to cut two minutes from the show to air more commercials which is ironic since the show is about advertising, saying: "I fought AMC cutting two minutes of the show. I love advertising. I write about advertising. I am an advocate of AMC making money. But an extra ad is a very limited financial reward for altering a show that put AMC on the map. Also, you are fighting the TiVo! Why give people less show?"

The 2nd season finale left us with lots of questions about the future. The focus of the season was on the rise of youth and it's impact on the world of advertising. The characters were part of the old ways of doing things and as the world was changing they were struggling to not only keep up but to adapt. We saw the "youth" movement take a stranglehold of Sterling Cooper but was it for the better or for the worse?

Here are a few of the questions that are burning in my mind:
Beware! 2nd season Spoilers below!

What becomes of Sterling Cooper now that it's been merged with PPL?
Will Duck Phillips stay on as President of the new Sterling Cooper after Don sandbags him and walks out?
What comes of the reveal that Betty is pregnant? Do her and Don get back together?
Speaking of reveals, what comes of Peggy's admitting to Pete that she had his baby? Does Pete leave his wife for Peggy?
Will Joan marry Greg after he raped her on the floor of Don's office?
Will Roger marry Jane even with the huge age difference?
What's the state of Sterling Cooper in the ad business?

Whatever the answers, it's time to gear up for the amazing Mad Men. After a very long hiatus we get 13 new episodes (does AMC think they're HBO or something?) If you need to catch up on the show the 2nd season has just been released on DVD and Blu-Ray and let me tell you that the show looks and sounds absolutely incredible on Blu-Ray!

If you can't get enough of Mad Men, you can also check out the Interview Magazine cover story about January Jones where she is interviewed by Jack Nicholson, yes that Jack Nicholson, and talks about what's it's like to be Betty Draper and her favorite movies (and a great video of Jones) There is also a very cool Mad Men Casting Call contest, sponsored by Banana Republic, where you can win a walk-on cameo role on the show. All you have to do is upload a picture featuring yourself in high Mad Men style for a chance to win a $1000 gift card and the walk-on role.

If you haven't checked it out already, there is also the ultimate fan site about Mad Men called Basket of Kisses which tells you everything you wanted to know and more about this incredible show.

I hope you follow me this season and feel free to leave comments and start discussions! Meanwhile, enjoy this clip of Jon Hamm and John Slattery answering fan questions.
