Future Ted tells us about how the future mother was in the classroom of his new classroom. Secondly, that Barney and Robin got together at the beginning of the summer. Lily gets upset that the new couple doesn't want to be a friend couple the same way that Robin and Barney do.
Marshall gets a bullwhip and fedora for Ted and Ted ends up whipping Marshall. Robin and Barney make plans to see other people but end up hooking up in the apartment where they are soon discovered. They explain that they never figured out how to define their relationship and didn't care for "the talk." Lily says they should have the talk.
Ted has a bad dream that he is not a good professor. Lily makes allusions to the importance of defining relationships and Barney says that things are fine the way they are. A really ripped guy asks out Robin and Barney is less than thrilled.
At the game, Robin tells the guy that asked her out that she's not sure about the relationship and Barney punches the guy when they appear on the kiss camera.
Ted gets a little awkward when trying to write 'professor' on the chalkboard but figures it out. Ted decides he is going to go with the strict professorial style. It turns out that he is in the wrong classroom. People try to tell him he's in the wrong classroom but he doesn't understand.
Lily messes with the door so Barney and Robin are forced to have 'the talk.' Robin asks them to let her out and she says she won't do it until they define the relationship and write it down and slip it on a piece of paper. They write all sorts of jokes and it doesn't go anywhere for awhile. Ted shows up and tells them he didn't have time to think about what kind of professor he would want to be.
Barney and Robin explain that neither are good at being in relationships and both are great at lying so they decide to lie about being in a relationship. They go out for brunch and Ted says they were lying and Lily says they don't realize that they weren't lying.
