The episode starts, as all good episodes do, with future Ted telling the kids how things used to be in New York: dingy and run-down. Then how things got better with the pub and a couple of really nice cafes. The best of which, Ted does not mention, is a bank which Barney's company acquires called Goliath National Bank.
Barney's company acquires the bank, which all of a sudden is in need of a few good lawyers. Hmm, do we know any lawyers that are looking for work? Of course we do; Marshall, of course. Lily says that he doesn't need to take the job because he can hold out for the environmental law work that he wanted to begin with. Of course, by the end of the episode, we find out that Marshall went ahead and took the job. He explains to Lily that they need the money and that it is really going to be okay.
The name of this episode comes from a noble quest that everyone takes thanks to Marshall; the quest for the best burger in New York. Marshall remembers that there was a restaurant where he got the best burger but he can't remember where it was or what it was called. They even get Regis Philbin in on the action, who also wants to help find the best burger.
Towards the end of the episode, people are sick of this quest but they realize that Marshall really wants work more than a burger, and he is using the burger as a distraction, so to speak. When they finally find the burger place, all are pleased; especially when they realize that it really is the best burger in New York
