Grey's Anatomy Fodder

Grey's Anatomy: Losing My Religion

Wow. Where to start? Last night's two hour season finale was so full of twists, turns and "oh my god moments", my mind is still spinning!

Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington) has been shot. His injuries, while not life threatening, may affect his ability to perform surgery in the future. He needs Cristina's (Sandra Oh) guidance and support but she's having a hard time coping with his vulnerability and she is unable to step up to the plate and be there for him. It's painful to watch his pleading eyes and see her walk away. We don't gain any insight into her insensitive behavior until she sits down with Dr. Webber. Her conversation with him exemplifies why Cristina is one of the best characters on television right now (and why Cristina Oh deserved her Emmy. She's complex and not always lovable but she's also always real and always likable, for better or worse.

With Denny (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) near death and Izzy (Katherine Heigl) to blame, the surgical interns circle the wagons to come to her aid and try to keep Denny alive. They are clearly in over their heads and Denny is not looking good. Finally, finally, the calvary arrives in the form of Dr. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and she steps in to save to day. If there was ever any thought that Dr. Bailey was "going soft" after returning from maternity leave, this episode will put that to rest. She barked, she bit and she got Denny his heart (with a little help from Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) who always shows he's a good guy in disguise). It's a nail biter for a while as the new heart is put into place and refuses to beat, but then, beep, beep, their it is...phew. Denny is going to make it.
(Okay, if you read yesterday's posting I had a "where I have I seen that actor before?" trivia question. The answer: the "rival" doctor who performed Denny's surgery was in Silence of the Lambs. She played the Senator's kidnapped daughter who lures the killers dog "Precious" down into her hole)

With Denny out of the woods, the grand inquisition begins. Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jr.) is on the war path to find out which surgical intern cut the power cord to Denny's portable heart machine. With all of surgical interns lined up in front of his desk it's like a scene from the game show To Tell The Truth. Each one proclaims "I cut the cord" leaving Dr. Webber with no concrete proof that it was Izzy. Next he calls them in one by one hoping someone of them will crack and rat out the guilty party. I started out hating this part - Alex's face to face with Dr. Webber made a mockery of the serious ethical lapse that occurred. But then George (T.R. Knight) reeled me in as he bared his soul and confessed his mixed feelings for Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Meredith. Next came Izzy and her "I'm a pretty girl" speech, which I loved. But then came Christina and I suddenly thought the whole scene was brilliant. Last up was Meredith, but instead of answering questions about Denny she turns it around and puts Dr. Webber in the hot seat. She tells him she knows about his affair with her mother. The revelation seems to give both of them peace They're burying the past and although it's not said, the implication is that it's time to move forward.

With no clear person to blame they are all punished. This is where I start to get really, really annoyed. When Dr. Webber's wife (Lorettta Devine) shows up with her niece, fresh from the prom, I thought "uh oh, here's comes the random tangent". And then it just got worse and worse. Dr. Webber's niece goes to her prom, has sex for the first time and faints. Now she's in the hospital and we find out her ovarian cancer from three years ago is back and she's going to die. What's a distraught uncle to do? As punishment for almost killing Denny the surgical interns must now throw this girl a new prom, in the hospital, and the entire staff must attend in full formal wear. Are they kidding us? It was a lame way to get the cast out of their scrubs and show some skin. Remember the shower scene post Super Bowl? It's the only time I've actually craved a dream sequence.

Before the big night, Meredith and Derek go to Finn aka "McVet's" (Chris O'Donnell) office to put their sick dog "Doc" to sleep. As they gather around their dying dog, it's clear this is more about mourning the lose of their relationship than it is about Doc dying. Meredith gets hysterical and it's obvious she's crying because she misses Derek. Derek looks sad and defeated. He's a man who can't have what he really wants. He reaches for her hand. He wants to connect with her, touch her and be with her, but she pulls away and runs out of the office.

Later that night at the prom (did I really just write those words in a Grey's Anatomy posting?) Meredith struts down the stairs like Cinderella going to the Royal Ball into the waiting arms of McVet. They head to the dance floor and Finn confesses that he feels like he's ready to move past his wife's death and make plans for the future with Meredith. Meredith seems ready to move forward too. Izzy arrives and heads to Denny's room to celebrate their good fortune. Denny has a new heart and he's asked her to marry him. Cristina finally comes to her senses and visits Dr. Burke. She is finally ready and able to support and love him. Callie and George, after a tiff earlier in the night, are making out in the hallway. The prom appears to be a smashing success and all is well at Seattle Grace Hospital. It seems we can ride out the summer knowing that all is well. But wait, damn, it's only 10:53pm.

Derek is dancing with Addison (Kate Walsh) but he only has eyes for Meredith. His stare is more than she can handle. She excuses herself from Finn and runs down the hall into an empty exam room. Derek is fast on her heels. She screams and shouts that he has to let her move on. She can't bear to see him look at her "that way". He makes his move. It's intense, steamy and real. The chemistry between these two is palatable. It's a scene you either love or hate, depending on how you feel about these two. The mood is broken (but not before the deed is done) when they're busted by Callie. Izzy needs Meredith. Oh no.

I knew Denny wasn't likely to make it to season three but when he survived the surgery and proposed to Izzy, I was intrigued and started to believe the writers were up the challenge of finding a place for Denny. I loved his character and became a huge fan of Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Seeing him in bed, with a smile on face, reading a magazine and waiting for Izzy, I was so relieved to see he'd survived the season finale. Watching his smile turn to a grimace and than drop dead from a stroke was heart wrenching. Is there anyone who wasn't crying at this point? It was amazing and seemed just right that Alex would be the one to step up and offer Izzy the comfort she needed. As they all file out of the hospital, Izzy's "I quit" statement was the only other ridiculous part. We all know she'll be back in scrubs by the second week in September.

And of course, because it all ultimately comes back to Meredith and Derek, when Meredith turns to leave the hospital, Finn is ready and waiting to take her home but Derek is giving her "the stare" again. It was hard to tell whether Addison detected that the gig was up between her and Derek. She faded from view and we were left to wonder whether Meredith would chose McDreamy or McVet. I'm betting on McVet. You gotta stretch the inevitable out as long as possible right? That's what keeps us coming back for more! Have a great summer.

I think you missed something in the ending scene that still has me chuckling. McVet starts to leave and stops. He looks at Meredith. McDoc (I don't find him dreamy) looks at Meredith, and just like a "I found the dog." - "But, it's my dog." scene, they both call her. "Here girl! Come on, Meredith!" Whoever she goes to gets to keep her.

Isaiah Thomas was a guard for the Detroit Pistons. Isaiah Washington plays Preston Burke on Grey's.

I was disappointed with this episode last night. I totally love this series and can relate being in the medical profession myself but the majority of the finale was overly dramatized and not believable!! Half those things would never have occurred in a real hospital - kind of takes away from the incredible momentum of the show which has played drama closely tied to real life up until this point! (and yeah - Burke should've been landing on the top of the hospital rather than entering thru emerg to get conveniently shot) Prom night at the hospital - very lame! Must've sounded cute/sweet in theory but didn't pull off nearly so well because it wasn't realistic!! It's interesting that NO emergencies came through while all the glitz and glamour of prom night was going on, and all the staff members weren't equipped/ dressed to respond immediately. The osteosarc storyline with Doc was a bit messed too - wish the writers had consulted an actual veterinarian or read a textbook before writing it in. Plus did Chris O'Donnell put on his stethoscope backwards?? Great acting from the majority of the cast though - Burke remains my favorite character (Cristina too). Wish there'd been more scenes with them! Will be watching for next season!

I'm so glad I'm not a doctor because even with my minimal knowledge of medical issues, I know how implausible many of the medical stories are! In this instance and with this show, my ignorance is bliss!

In what other show did Jeffrey kick the bucket? This guys deserves a pilot next season. He's so good!

I love this part of your comment:

"It's intense, steamy and real. The chemistry between these two is palatable. It's a scene you either love or hate, depending on how you feel about these two."

Love or hate them, Ellen and Patrick have an amazing chemistry together.
