Grey's Anatomy Fodder

Grey's Anatomy: 17 Seconds

"Izzy, don't do it!" Was anyone else screaming at their television last night at about 10:55 p.m.? Did I miss something or did George suddenly lose control of this legs? How else do you explain his inability to walk five feet across the room and stop Izzy from very likely killing Denny? Okay, I'm taking a deep breath and backing up a bit.

Last night's part one of the two part season finale began with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Addison (Kate Walsh) clustered around "Dr. McVet" (Chris O'Donnell) as he delivers the grim news that their dog "Doc" has bone cancer. The mood in the room is thick with tension. Derek is brooding because "McVet" is dating Meredith. Meredith is seething because Derek called her a "whore". Addison's stoic exterior is crumbling at the realization that something is going on between Meredith and Derek. And "McVet" is well... he's just clueless and probably wondering why three doctors who see death every day and are never actually home to see their dog (which they've only had for a few months anyway) are suddenly all bent out of shape when they find out he's sick.

Addison is convinced that the anger between Derek and Meredith must be a lover's quarrel so she flat out asks Meredith "are you sleeping with my husband?"

Meredith replies, "not since I knew he had a wife. I'm moving on, I'm dating Finn (aka Dr. McVet)."

It's the big "ah-ha" moment for Addison. She gets it now. Derek is jealous of Meredith and Finn. She confronts Derek in the hall. "I sleep with your best friend and you walk away. Then he comes here to rub it into your face and you don't loose a night's rest over it. I guess the only way to get your attention is to sleep with the vet. But oh wait, that wouldn't work either because I'm not Meredith Grey". Now this is one conversation that should have taken place in the stairwell because when Addison finishes her tirade she looks down to see Meredith, Christina (Sandra Oh) and half the staff looking at them. It was just a wee bit awkward for poor Addison who I must admit I am still routing for at this point. Meredith continues to suffer from "whine-y-itis" and her hair is still really bugging me. She's just not "McDreamy" worthy yet. Okay, enough about Meredith and Derek, let's get back to Izzy (Katherine Heigl) and Denny (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

Dr. Burke (Isaiah Thomas) and Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) head out by helicopter to retrieve a heart at another hospital that's a perfect match for Denny. Against Dr. Bailey's (Chandra Wilson) better judgment, she allows Izzy to prep Denny for the surgery. Dr. Bailey knows Izzy is too emotionally invested in Denny but Izzy wears her down by agreeing to stay strictly professional. Izzy tells Denny the good news- a heart is on the way. Denny is obviously thrilled but he decides to fill out DNR (do not resuscitate) paperwork just in case. He tells Izzy he believes in heaven and would rather be in heaven than live as he is now. Izzy is upset by his decision but feels confident he's getting his new heart so the DNR papers will never come into play. Then Alex calls with bad news. The donor died before they could retrieve his heart. Denny's only hope lies with the donor's brother, also a match. The brothers were in a car accident together and each heart was assigned to a different patient. Now that Denny's donor is dead, Dr. Burke is battling with a rival heart surgeon who wants the heart for her own patient. (Quiz: The actress playing the part of the rival heart surgeon was in a Jodi Foster movie. What is the name of the movie and what part did she play in it? I'll post the answer tomorrow) The other patient beat Denny onto the transplant list by 17 seconds and has first dibs on the heart as long as Denny's condition remains stable. The news is more than Izzy can handle. She knows that because of the DNR, any complications to arise before a new heart can be found could mean death for Denny. This realization literally pushed Izzy over the edge of sanity. She tells Dr. Burke that Denny's heart is failing and then sets out to make sure it does. Denny at first thinks Izzy's crazy but she begs and pleads (a great bit of acting from Katherine Heigle) with him to go along with her plan, not for his sake but for hers. Denny finally agrees (damn, that Izzy can be persuasive) so runs to get George (T.R. Knight) to help her. George enters Denny's room and finds Izzy near hysterics as she prepares to cut his portable heart machine- a cut that will leave Denny near death very quickly. George sizes up the situation and asks Izzy repeatedly, " Izzy, what are you planning to do " but for some reason stays glued to his spot by the door. She explains to him that Dr. Burke will be arriving any minute with the new heart and Denny will be saved. Then she snips the cord. It proves to be a very, very bad move.

Dr. Burke is on his way back to Seattle Grace but not with the heart. He caught wind of Izzy's plan and he rushed back to try and stop Izzy from doing something stupid. He arrives back just as a crazed gunman responsible for shooting 14 co-workers at a restaurant earlier in the day, comes to the hospital to finish the job he started. The manager of the restaurant, the intended victim of the shooter, is being released with only minor injuries when suddenly gun fire erupts outside the ER. Dr. Bailey rushes out to find the restaurant manager splayed out on the ground suffering from gun shot wounds. Laying next to him, unconscious and with blood pooling under him is Dr. Burke. (what's he doing coming through the ER anyway? Didn't he take the helicopter back? Should he be on the roof?) His injury appears serious (I'll bet Christina will feel a tad guilty about declaring that she's planning on dumping him since he took Alex with him for the heart surgery instead of her- nothing like your boyfriend taking a few bullets in the chest to put things into perspective)

So tonight's the night. Grey's on a Monday? Thank god we don't have to wait a week to find out what happens. I'm betting Burke survives (how could he not) and Denny's a goner. (Of course in real life Izzy would lose her job but since this is TV and she's a main character, I'm betting she comes out of this with her job intact. After all, won't losing Denny and knowing she's responsible, be punishment enough? )

I've been following grace anatomy since the beggining and loved the show until today. This is going back to when it started!!! How can Meredith be so stupid and have sex with Derek!!! Does she don't have any dignity left in herself then to fall back with that player doc? Thank God that my favourite characters Dr. Burke, Bailey and Christina are the only normal ones in that hospital. I hated the ending and I hope the writers in the next season come up with a better way to justified Meredith stupidity (like going for Chris O'Donnell instead of that player doc.)
Of all the episodes today was the worst ever!!!

I was completely traumatized by last night's episode. Denny! Why??? I loved his character and the storyline that revolved around him and Izzy, even though I knew it couldn't last in TVland. If they had gotten married, how would he have fit in to the show when it revolves around the hospital? Very disappointing, though. The actors had such awesome chemistry! I will definitely continue to seek out performances of the actor who played Denny.
