Grey's Anatomy Review Part II - As We Know It

Last weeks Grey's Anatomy "cliffhanger" left us to wonder whether Dr. Merideth Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and her patient would be blown to bits during surgery to remove live ammunition from the chest of a war reenactment fanatic. It seems Meredith had a dream that this day would be the day she would die. When Hannah the paramedic (played by Christina Ricci) went AWOL, Dr. Grey stepped in to stabilize the ammo and perhaps make her dream come true? Would the ammunition explode and kill Dr. Grey along with her former boyfriend and co-worker Dr. "Mc Dreamy" aka Dr. Shepard (Patrick Demsey) and his patient (coincidently, or not so coincidentally, since it is sweeps month after all- Dr. Bailey's husband Tucker who sustained a serious brain injury in a car crash as he rushed to be by his wife's side when she went into labor). We were also left to wonder whether Alex (Justine Chambers) would finally be able to successfully do the deed with Izzy (Katherine Heigl).

This weeks episode begins back in the surgical wing with Dr. Grey's hand inside her patient's chest. Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington) enters the room to find Meredith and Cristina (Sandra Oh) being suited up with body armor by the head of the bomb squad. Dr. Burke tells Cristina to leave, but Cristina is not one to walk away from anything so of course, she refuses. Burke leans in and in one of those moments that typifies why the chemistry between these two is so good, he softly whispers "Cristina, I can not do this with you in here. I cannot think." Cristina responds, " you know those movies where there is always a hero and then there's the other guy, You know, the guy who sees danger and then runs in the opposite direction? Be that other guy." Then she reluctantly walks out the door leaving her best friend and her lover behind to deal with the explosive device. Instead of leaving the surgical wing as Dr. Burke instructed, she joins Dr. Shepard next door to assist him with Dr. Bailey's husband.

Meanwhile, Dr. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is so distraught over her husband's life threatening accident she is demanding to be sent home rather than deliver her baby without her husband. George (T.R. Knight) tries to get her to think rationally but she is refusing to push despite the fact that she is putting her baby's health in serious jeopardy.

After his failed attempt to get Dr. Bailey to deal in reality, and a tongue lashing from Dr. Montogmery Shepard (Kate Walsh), George is feeling helpless and defeated as he retreats to what is becoming one of this favorite hiding spots....the stairwell. He finds Hannah hiding out with a cut on her hand from when she fell while high tailing it away from the bomb. She's too ashamed of what she's done to seek treatment. While George is stiching her wound she explains that she feels like a coward because she ran away. "You think youre' going to be the kind of person who stays and does something. You know, the good man in the storm. I'm a paramedic. I'm supossed to stay and do something, and I ran away." You can almost see the light bulb go off over George's head. You know that after this little chat he's a man with a plan.

The bomb squad is in the place and ready to proceed with the removal of the ammunition............but wait! Chief of Surgery, Dr. Weber (James Pickens Jr. ) is looking over the blue prints of the hospital and realizes that the main oxygen lines for the hosiptal run right under the room where Meredith and her patient are waiting. If the ammunition were to explode, it could ignite the entire hospital. The only solution is to move the patient to a different room away from the oxygen lines without disturbing the ammo. Cristina looks out from her surgical room and sees Meredith and the bomb squad, slowly rolling the patient on a gurney down the hall. One jiggle and the ammo could explode. Cristina needs to be with Meredith who seems to be cracking under the stress. Meredith needs to focus on something other than her life threatening situation so as the gurney moves slowly down the hall, Cristina tells Meredith that Dr. Burke told her he loved her. He had thought she was sleeping when he whispered it to her the night before but she heard it.

Where are Alex and Izzy while their fellow residents are in mortal danger? After a successful romp is the supply closet (Alex can get it up after all! ) Alex is consoling Izzy who is feeling guilty for having been jeolous of Meredith and Cristina for stepping in to take over the critical patients that have now put their lives in jeopardy. His "consoling" quickly leads to romp #2 in the supply closet. Perhaps feeling guilty about the fact that they're having sex while their coworkers are dealing with more serious matters, they head out to find Dr. Weber and see if they can make themselves useful. Dr. Weber seems to be unraveling from the stress. When Alex and Izzy find him, he sweating and having trouble breathing. Suddenly he is about to collapse and Izzy and Alex fear he's having a heart attack.

While Izzy and Alex treat the Chief, George heads back to Dr. Bailey's room. Dr. Montgomery Shepard is worried that Dr. Bailey's baby is in serious distress and she is about to make arrangements to perform an emergency C-section. Just then George steps in and takes control. He gives Dr. Bailey a serious talking to. "You are Dr. Bailey. You don't hide from a fight. You don't give up. You strive for greatness. You are a doer. There are a lot of things going on here that we can't control but this you can do." She leans up and gets ready to push. What does George do now? He hops on the bed and props himself up behind Dr. Bailey (Now I've watched countless hours of TLC's A Baby Story and I have never seen a birthing partner actually get into bed with a woman in labor. I have to say, it was weird for a minute but then it starting to work for me. George is so sweet and Dr. Bailey is usually such a tough cookie that watching him help her and her allowing him to do so, worked for me.)

The next segment cuts back and forth between three scenes. George is coaching Dr. Bailey. Her baby is coming but her husband has flat lined on the operating table and Dr. Shepard and Cristina are trying to save him. Meredith is about to pull out the ammo when she starts to panic. If she's going to die she wants Dr. Burke and the guy from the bomb squad to leave the room so they don't die along with her. The head of the bomb squad asks her to pretend he is someone she likes and focus on his words and he'll get her through this....flash to a dream sequence (hey, it's sweeps remember?) The room goes white and she's alone with Derek. "I'm scared" she tell him. "I know, but you can do this. You can do this Meredith. It will be over in a second."
Finding the strength she needs from Derek's words she returns to reality and pulls the ammo out of the patient and hands it to the guy from the bomb squad. He turns and walks out the of the room with it.

Dr. Burke saves the patient. Dr. Bailey delivers her baby. Izzy and Alex determine the Chief just had a panic attack. Dr. Shepard revives Dr. Bailey's husband. All is well at Seattle Grace again.

Meanwhile, Meredith, feeling relieved and thankful that today was not her day to die, follows the bomb squad guy out into the hall and watches as he walks it down the hall to his team. Suddenly the hallway explodes and Meredith is thrown back. The head of the bomb squad has been blown to bits. The threat was real and the bomb squad guy paid with this life (sadly, I was hoping he'd be back as Meredith's new love interest...I was feeling something there! But alas, it was not meant to be.) Fortunately, Meredith and her coworkers survived the sweeps month gimmick and will back next week. (sigh of relief).

The last few scenes show Cristina and Burke in bed. While he sleeps she tells him she loves him. Is it his turn to fake sleep? Did he hear her? We don't know.

Dr. Bailey brings her new baby boy, William George Bailey Jones to see her husband in the recovery room. The guys is doing remarkable well considering he just had brain surgery!

Realizing Meredith's life had been in jeopardy, Derek is clearly still grappling with is decision to stay with Addison. When he returns from the ER he is frantic to see Meredith but instead finds Addison and clearly wishes he were hugging Meredith instead. He just has to see Meredith so he heads over to her house. She's been cleaned up by Cristina and Izzy (so the shower scene from Part I comes full circle...It wasn't a cheap ploy to pull in viewers after the Super Bowl but instead it gives context to the part II shower scene and shows how much Izzy and Cristina care for Meredith! I should have know it wasn't just an excuse to demean these talented actresses and pander to the hormones of testosterone fueled sports fans!) and is resting when Derek shows up. Will he tell her he can't live life without her? No, instead they relive the memory of their last kiss and then he leaves. We'll have to wait for May sweeps to see these two get it on again.

Anyone know what the song was that was playing in Meredith's dream sequence right before she pulled out the ammo? I'm in love with it and the credits flew by so I don't know who it's by!
