General Hospital: The Wedding Event of the Year

11-16-06
Today was Luke and Laura’s big day! 25 years after their first history making wedding, General Hospital has put them together again. As Laura walks the grounds of the Quartermaine mansion Helena sneaks up behind her.
lukelaurawed.jpg Laura thinks that she has come to curse the wedding. Helena tells her she doesn’t have to curse the wedding. It is already doomed. Laura is given the traditional wedding symbols of something borrowed and blue and something new from her family. I think the best gift was the handkerchief from her mother that had hearts on it stitched by Laura’s grandmother. It was a very sweet moment. Meanwhile, Luke and Lucky have a little bonding time before the ceremony.

Tracy is hilarious. She is dressed in full funeral gear complete with flask. Big Alice takes care of her when she gets up to say her objections to the wedding. The commotion pauses the ceremony, but only for a few moments.

It was a beautiful ceremony. I wish I could have seen the first wedding 25 years ago to compare it to today. If any of you have seen it, be sure to tell me what you think about the two weddings.

Luke and Laura wrote their own vows. Luke is obviously still in love with her just as much if not more. It is evident on his face. “Nothing ever has or will extinguish that flame,” Luke says of their love in his vows. One hitch during Laura’s vows was Helena lurking in the bushes watching. That lady is pretty creepy. Once Laura regains her composure she declares to love him “Now and forever”. After that the wedding continues without a hitch. Unfortunately, the happiness is tainted by her memory lapses. It is obvious that she is slowly beginning to regress.

Diego spots Spinelli at the convenience store and knows where Sam and Jason are. Now all they have to do is wait them out. Sam and Jason have a moment together that is ruined by Spinelli banging on the door wanting to be let out.

Jason, Sam and Spinelli get into the car outside. . It doesn’t start. Jason realizes that there is a bomb. At the same time, Ric barges in on the wedding reception to arrest Sonny. He claims that Sam and Jason have not shown up like they were supposed to. Carly yells at him saying they still have fifteen minutes. Sonny realizes that Ric must know that they will not make it because he planned it that way because they still had fifteen minutes. This news makes Elizabeth faint. Luckily, depending on how you look at it, Sam and Jason got out of the car in time to get behind a dumpster before the bomb blasted.

I thought that the editors of this episode did a really good job. It was interesting how the two couples are paralleled with the editing. As Luke and Laura are dancing, Sam and Jason, along with Spinelli run out of the car as fast as they can realizing that these could be their last moments. Tune in tomorrow to find out what happens!

I saw the first wedding. I was in school and we all cut out to watch it. Lots of weeping and oooooo-ing and aaaaa-ing - even the guys! There are clips all over if you want to see the clothes etc.

One thing was very different - at that point Luke was really an anti-hero since he raped Laura. It was a very controversial storyline. She was married to Scotty (Kin Shriner) and Luke brutalized her and messed up her marriage (not to speak of her psyche etc.)

My friends and I weren't outraged enough at the time - I think we didn't get what all of it meant - but as I got older and figured it all out - that whole backstory was really repugnant and terrible. Didn't send a good message at all. I wasn't reading rags or following the outside part of the story so I'm not sure exactly how people reacted.

The show did a great job of Lucky finding out what Luke did - I don't remember it really but remember that it was terrific.

Anyway - nowadays they are the couple to beat - there isn't a soap couple -(not to mention primetime) who matches them and the way they work together.
