General Hospital: A Sad, Sad Day in Port Charles

This episode was touching and sad. Although, other characters had a few scenes in the episode, this was definitely an episode about the Spencer family. So, I will focus my blog on what they, and we, the viewers, were put through.

Luke catches Laura staring at the Christmas angel and is scared for a moment when she doesn’t respond to him at first. I would hate to live like that. Not knowing if the next moment will be their last with a fully functioning Laura. It must be killing them. Jason and Lucky show up bearing presents! Lucky is the first to open a present. He gets a digital camera. He tries to take a picture of Laura but she is staring off into the distance. Luke gently caresses her face and brings her out of it.

Laura decides that it’s time to call the doctor. She wants to know how much time she has left. Dr. Drake tells them that the episodes she’s been having will happen more and more frequently. Laura says that she would like to go back to Shadybrook now while she can still make it there on her own. She can’t bare the thought of the staff of Shadybrook coming to collect her. She wants to go with dignity while she still can. After a little bit of arguing, they finally agree and take her to Shadybrook.

After she's checked herself in and is in her room, Laura says goodbye to her children. She tells Nikolas that she is impressed with the generosity of his spirit. She wants to make sure that he doesn’t always put others before him. She tells Lucky how proud she is of him. She tells him that he is strong and he can get through this rough time in his life. Lulu apologizes for yelling at her when she made the decision to go back to Shadybrook. Laura tells Lulu that when she looks at her she sees her father. She’s rebellious and feisty, but she’s always protecting her heart. She tells Lulu that when the time comes for her to fall in love, not to be afraid. She tells her that she’s sorry that she got shortchanged because she wasn’t around for her all these years. This is a three hanky day. Definitely. Laura tells Lulu one important thing. She thinks that she’s innocent. That she didn’t kill her stepfather. Lulu vows to prove her innocence.

Luke comes in after the children leave. He tells her he loves her and he always will. She tells him that nothing is as beautiful as looking in his eyes and knowing that they will always love each other. They kiss one last time.

She finally fades away completely. Luke tells her that wherever she is, a garden somewhere, wherever, that he’s there with her, in his heart. And that he will love her until the day he dies. He walks out of the room and shuts the door and cries.

Dillon goes to see Lulu to tell her he is sorry about what she’s going through. She tells him that she’s going to prove her mother’s innocence. That sounds like an interesting new storyline.

The last moment of the episode is what really made me cry. When Laura was gone the sounds of their first wedding could be heard as though in her regressed state, she was living in that one happy moment. I don’t think an episode of a soap opera has ever affected me quite as much as this one has. It was so well written. I’m just so sad that they did that to one of my favorite characters on the soap!

Genie Francis, as always, pulled this off with such grace. I can’t say enough good things about her. So, all you loyal General Hospital viewers, wipe up your tears, enjoy the holiday, and come back next week to continue watching General Hospital.
