Dollhouse Fodder

Dollhouse 1.3 "Stage Fright"

Stage-Fright.jpgIt's our homage to the Pussycat Dolls episode tonight here on Dollhouse! In fact, for a moment I thought it was the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls. Rayna, the Pussycat Doll wannabe, is performing when one of her backup singers catches on fire. Rut-ro.

Meanwhile, over at Agent Ballard's apartment, Mellie - his next door neighbor and would-be stalker stumbles on Lubov, the Russian Ballard believes knows about the Dollhouse. He's trying to break into Ballard's apartment but Mellie puts the kibosh on that by interrupting him. After creeping her out, he gives her a card where Ballard can meet him.

Rayna's manager hires the Dollhouse to insert an active into Rayna's group so Dewitt puts Echo in as a backup singer but her persona is hardwired to keep Rayna safe. They send in a new active, Sierra (Dichen Lachman), in as backup. Her persona is Audra, Rayna's biggest fan, flown in from Australia (where Lachman is from and can use her regular accent when speaking.)

Ballard meets with Lubov. Lubov insists there is no Dollhouse, Ballard disagrees. We soon find out that Victor is an active also. Who's sending him out to mess with Ballard? And why keep wiping his memory if he's still on the mission? Lubov gives Ballard a clue where to find some info - old abandoned warehouse. That's like a bad horror flick - don't go in there! Ballard goes in and gets attacked by three Russian mobsters. He gets shot in the gut but is able to fight them off. They know nothing of the Dollhouse and Ballard calls 911 barely in time to save himself.

Rayna's biggest fan is also the biggest geek. After getting voted off of Beauty and the Geek, he decides to go all Misery on Rayna and kill her for the sake of her stardom. Echo finds out that Rayna is still communicating with her Geekfan. I was actually kind of rooting for Rayna to bite the big one - she was quite annoying. Echo finds notes from the Geekfan threatening her life.

Echo takes her hardwired protocol of saving Rayna to the next level. Echo sees Rayna as a bigger threat to herself then her biggest fan. Rayna knows the Geekfan is going to try to kill her and she welcomes it. She's sick of living her charmed life... Hell, give me the gun! When Echo thwarts Geekfan's attempt, he kidnaps Audra and threatens to kill her. Echo takes Rayna hostage after hearing her narcissistic rant and offers her up in trade for Audra. Echo saves all even though she went off task and did it her own way. She saw Rayna as a bigger threat than Geekfan and subconsciously found another solution to finish her task.

Dominic wants to send Echo to the "attic," but Dewitt disagrees. We see Echo and Sierra walk toward each other at the Dollhouse after being wiped, Sierra looks at Echo knowingly, but Echo shakes her head slightly. Now is not the time to "know" each other.

Mellie goes to see Ballard in the hospital but it doesn't look like the agents standing guard are going to let him in. Hey Mellie! If Ballard put you on as his emergency contact, there's hope for you yet! Ballard is looking mighty depressed.

What did you think?

Could Agent Ballard be Alpha? Or maybe Dr. Saunders? Hell, maybe it's Mellie! They make her look kind of plain on the show, but the actress, Miracle Laurie, is quite pretty. One wonders if Joss hired her because of her cool first name, just like Charisma Carpenter. Note to self: give spawn really cool names so Joss will hire them...

Only the third episode and we're already at the "How skimpy an outfit can we pour Eliza into?"

I thought Geekfan looked a lot like Topher. Maybe they'll cast him as his brother in another episode.

So is there a glitch in the wipe programming? Looks like Sierra and Echo are retaining some of their personas.

Note to Joss: Dr. Horrible/Dollhouse crossover episode, please. Dr. Horrible needs a new love since Penny's gone. How about Captain Hammer hires Echo to go in as a new love for Dr. H to set him up... Go with me here... Musical Dollhouse episode. Me needs to see Tamoh Penikett gratuitously shirtless and singing. Thank you...

The sad thing is, Rayna probably has just as much talent as anyone in the Pussycat Dolls or any "real" pop star on the radio today. And that is very, very sad.
