As long suspected, the fourth season of "Battlestar Galactica" will be its last, the Sci Fi Channel confirmed today. The cat was sort of out of the bag--Edward James Olmos (Adama) and Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck) had said as much to the media in recent weeks, although BSG's producing team had been quick to overrule them. However, Ron Moore and David Eick have gone public with the decision--just weeks after "Lost" made a similar announcement--which should create some urgency around BSG's final 22 hours (20 hours of which will focus on the Galactica, with a special two-hour movie, "Razor," returning to the story of the Pegasus in November). Per the producing team's press release:
"This show was always meant to have a beginning, a middle and, finally, an end...Over the course of the last year, the story and the characters have been moving strongly toward that end, and we've decided to listen to those internal voices and conclude the show on our own terms. And while we know our fans will be saddened to know the end is coming, they should brace themselves for a wild ride getting there -- we're going out with a bang."
While the decision has disappointed many fans, the producers' goal to retain creative control while rapidly advancing the story line sits well in this camp. Of course, with just one season left, the BSG team should be picky about the content that fills those remaining hours--here's hoping that the process will weed out any more "Black Markets" or "Days in the Life"!
