Battlestar Fodder

New 'Battlestar Galactica' Movie, Blogger Coming

Welcome to the new Battlestar Fodder.

I’ll start my first post by admitting that it’s a little intimidating taking over the "Battlestar" beat for Shannon Nolley. I’ve been reading Shannon’s detailed episode recaps, news bits and opinions for a while now, and I hope … well … I just hope I don’t alienate every reader on this site, to write the truth. Just know that I’m coming in as a writer and as a fan, (I have a Baltar desktop, seriously) and I’m ready to follow this series for as long as I can.

That said, I also must admit that I’m not too keen on reading episode recaps on the Web. If I’m looking for copy on a show I just watched, I want to read more opinion/analysis about it than anything else. So, from now on, that’s what you’ll find on Battlestar Fodder. TV recaps are fine, but, speaking as a fan, I think dialogue-sparking analysis is the way to go when blogging about TV, especially when writing about such a complex and compelling show like "Galactica." Here’s a loose example of what to look forward to from my reviews.

Also, look here for up-to-date news and information about the show and about everything else the cast and crew of "Galactica" are up to. I’ll try to post news every week along with weekly episode reviews. Do not look here for spoilers or dubious rumors. Spoilers scare me and rumors don’t interest me, so, you know, there’ll be none of that.

So, here’s some early news straight from executive producers Ron Moore and David Eick. They’ve confirmed that they’re working on a movie version of "Galactica." Moore and Eick told the Chicago Tribune that the movie will probably go straight to DVD and then air on Sci-Fi before season four hits the air. The movie will not resolve the cliffhanger that’s supposed to cap the third season, they said, but it will feature most of the cast from the series. Read the article linked to above for more but be warned, it contains spoilers.

So, how are they going to do this — make a canon movie version of the show without resolving a cliffhanger? Will the film focus on just a few characters? Will it be a prequel to set up the possible "Caprica" show that Sci-Fi has confirmed won’t air until 2008? However it turns out, I’m sure it’ll be quality with these two behind the wheel. I know a lot of fans have been grumbling about some of the placeholder episodes this season and how the show might be run out of gas soon, but I’m holding out hope for the film and the series.

Finally, Sci-Fi will run a "Galactica" marathon on Jan. 15. The marathon will air the first half of season three starting at 8 a.m. The marathon will feature a crawl with selected fan comments starting at noon. Also, Sci-Fi will give away a "Galactica" prize pack to a few lucky fans who can answer trivia questions during the marathon. Click here for more info. The series returns with new episodes Jan. 21.

Oh, by the way, my name’s Mike.
