NBC Facing Heat Over Golden Globes

Who knew the Golden Globes could produce so much drama?

According to Entertainment Weekly, the news that NBC was going to air a three-hour special in lieu of the recently canceled Golden Globes irked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Representatives for both the HFPA, which gives out the awards, and Dick Clark Productions, which would have produced the event, were not pleased that NBC was going ahead with a show at all. It seems the HFPA felt it was just a way for NBC to promote its other shows, like "Dateline NBC" and "Access Hollywood." Dick Clark Prods. was also upset they'd have to continue shelling out money for an awards show that doesn't exist.

EW also reports that Dick Clark Prods. then tried to ask for a licensing fee to offset costs, but was denied. In response, both the HFPA and Dick Clark Prods. have opened the show up to everyone. They've even made calls to other shows like "Entertainment Tonight," "Extra," and "The Insider" to have hosts from those shows help announce the awards.

This whole fiasco started when, first, the WGA announced they would picket the awards show, and soon after, the Screen Actors Guild said they would shun the event as well. With a lack of famous stars, NBC announced plans early last week to cancel this Sunday's awards show. In its place, the network scheduled a two-hour Golden Globe-themed "Dateline NBC" followed by a one-hour press conference in which the winners are announced.

There's no confirmation yet on who exactly will be airing the press conference, but we'll all find out Sunday night! --Chris Sardelli
