Has ABC finally struck comedy gold? It's too early to tell, but the ratings for the premieres of "Cavemen" and "Carpoolers" are promising.
The two shows, which air back-to-back on Tuesdays from 8 to 9 p.m., did surprisingly well for their first outings, coming in second in the ratings last week behind CBS's "NCIS." The Futon Critic, which reports ratings for all network shows, lists "Cavemen" as earning ABC the highest ratings in its time period since last November. The website also reports "Carpoolers" drew a sizable amount of viewers, especially young men.
This feat is surprising given the fact that both shows have earned poor reviews from critics. Despite what the critics think, these ratings are good news for ABC, which badly needs a comedy hit. "Cavemen" is an extension of the popular Geico ads, while "Carpoolers" is a comedy about four men who ride to work together.
TV Guide reports ABC already has plans to draw more women to "Carpoolers" with a guest-star turn by "Ugly Betty"s Rebecca Romijn. It doesn't hurt that the actress is married to "Carpoolers" star Jerry O'Connell. --Chris Sardelli
