And they're off!!! The Fall 2007 television season officially started last night with all of the major networks unveiling premieres or delivering new content. According to Variety, though, the night was uneven on most accounts.
Monday's clear winner is ABC, with an average of 15.4 million viewers tuning in to see "Dancing With the Stars" and "The Bachelor." Both shows attracted more viewers than their premieres last year. CBS followed with 12.2 million viewers, NBC placed third with 11 million and Fox was last with a paltry 6.7 million people. Also bad news for Fox, their one-two punch of "Prison Break" and "K-Ville" apparently didn't appeal to television viewers. "Break" pulled in 7.3 million viewers, down from last season, which is too bad seeing as how this season's story line is promising to be more exciting that last year's on-the-run jumble.
Last night's ratings also proved that nerds are here to stay. NBC's spy comedy "Chuck," about a regular Joe who becomes a reluctant secret agent, averaged a respectable 9.3 million viewers. Over on CBS, the new dork comedy "The Big Bang Theory" about geniuses who know everything but how to pick up a girl, also did well with 9.6 million people.
And while "K-Ville" could be considered the big loser for the night, with only 6.2 million viewers, that's not how it works in ratings land. "Journeyman" on NBC wins the title of Least-Watched New Show, only because it lost 5 million of the 14.1 million viewers that had just tuned into the "Heroes" premiere. Honestly, though, is anyone surprised that a confusing looking show that was not highly touted by NBC didn't attract a lot of people? -- Chris Sardelli
