Searching for an "American Band"

AmBand.jpgNow that this summer's crop of musically-inclined reality shows have ended (goodbye "America's Got Talent" and "So You Think You Can Dance") and there's still a four month wait for "American Idol," Fox announced plans for the newest addition to its lineup- "The Next Great American Band." The show, similar in style to its successful cousin, will feature audition rounds and musical theme weeks for the remaining musicians. And just like Taylor Hicks and Jordin Sparks before them, the winners will sign a contract with 19 Recordings. The difference though, according to "Band" Executive Producer Ken Warwick, will be watching how a group of people handles the stress together.

"Part of the appeal will be the interaction of the band members themselves," said Warwick in a video on Idol's website.

The key to an entertaining reality competition, though, always lies in its boisterous and outspoken judges. Fox just announced who would fill "Band's" three slots. First up is John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, followed by performer/drummer Sheila E. and filling the coveted "guy with an accent" role is "Australian Idol" judge Ian Dickson. Hosting the show, and trying to live up to Ryan Seacrest no doubt, is "New Zealand Idol" star Dominic Bowden.

The show rocks out starting October 19 on Fox. -- Chris Sardelli
