Alicia Witt Nabs "Law & Order" Role

awitt.jpg"Law & Order: Criminal Intent" is alive with activity. The veteran court/cop drama will add Alicia Witt's fresh face when it moves to the USA Network this fall.

The move is part of a trend to bring in stronger female characters, possibly due to the popularity of Kyra Sedgwick's "The Closer," which airs on TNT.

"USA in recent years has been a little too focused on guys for my tastes," said Bonnie Hammer, who serves as president of both USA and the Sci Fi Channel.

Witt will be paired up with Chris Noth's Detective Mike Logan while Julianne Nicholson is out on maternity leave, says USA Today. No word on what will happen to her character once Nicholson's leave is up.

Witt starred on the Cybill Shepherd sitcom, "Cybil," for three years. She also starred on the big screen in "Cecil B. DeMented," "The Upside of Anger" and "88 Minutes."

"Law & Order: Criminal Intent" will air every Thursday at 10:00 p.m. (EST) on USA, starting October 4. -- Rachel Cericola
