Sci Fi to Air Revamp of Flash Gordon

ejohnson-lee.jpgNow that major television networks have closed up shop on another television season and left viewers to ponder shows like "Pirate Master," the cable networks are picking up the slack. One show that should give the public something to watch this August is Sci Fi's "Flash Gordon," which stars "Smallville" alum Eric Johnson.

The title character, a regular guy turned adventurer, began in the 1930s as a comic strip, but eventually made its way to radio serials, several television shows and even a 1980 feature film. Now the character returns again, this time as a marathon runner who discovers his dead scientist father is actually still alive. Unfortunately, he's trapped on another planet.

Johnson promises the show will stick to its sci-fi roots and feature everything from wormholes to ray guns. And while the setup sounds pretty campy (a distant planet called Mongo and a nemesis named Ming the Merciless…I kid you not), it sounds like a mix of several popular franchises including Indiana Jones and Superman. Hey, any show that features the main character battling an evil android in his kitchen has to be worth a few viewings, right? What's your other option, walking the plank? --Chris Sardelli
