Mike Douglas Dies

mdouglas.jpgBefore the days of the Letterman and Leno late-night wars, there were four talk show hosts that ruled daytime: Phil Donahue, Dinah Shore, Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas. Sadly, MSNBC is reporting that Douglas has died. Even sadder, he passed on his 81st birthday.

"The Mike Douglas Show" aired from 1961 to 1982. He was known for his singing -- and even had a few hits in the 40s and 60s -- as well as his famous guests. He recapped many of his 6,000 shows in his 1999 memoir, "I'll Be Right Back: Memories of TV's Greatest Talk Show."

Douglas recovered from prostate cancer surgery in 1990. A few weeks back, he had been treated on and off for dehydration that had occurred while he was out on the golf course. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. -- Rachel Cericola
