This Tyler Perry guy is pretty amazing. He creates this huge phenomenon with "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" and then manages to recreate the same magic with "Madea's Family Reunion." I don't really get it, but I certainly have to commend it.
Now TV Week says Perry is bringing some of those ideas to the small screen. He has signed a deal with Debmar-Mercury to create a first-run syndication comedy series called "House of Payne."
The sitcom will revolve around a multigenerational family living under one roof. Just don't expect to see him donning drag any time soon. While Perry will be the creative force directing, producing and writing, "star" will not be one of his credits. However, rumor has it that he might make a few guest appearances.
"Madea's Family Reunion" debuted at No. 1 at the box office with a $30 million haul. "Payne" will be available to stations in various markets starting in the spring/summer, with more episodes available in fall 2007. -- Rachel Cericola
Good Night and Good Luck, Perry. Hope he campaigns hard for a fixed channel and daytime time slot = greater chance of success (a la Oprah, Howard Stern, etc.). That's what's wrong with Tom Joyner's TV show; it's in the scheduling ghetto and you can't easily recommend it to a remote friend because it broadcasts at wildly different times in different markets on different channels ("When can I TiVO it here? - Look it up on his website. - Anyway. Next!").
