John Spencer Dies

jspencer.jpgABC News is reporting that John Spencer, the actor who survived a serious illness and ran for vice president on NBC's "The West Wing," has died. His 59th birthday was to be next week.

Spencer, who played Leo McGarry, died of a heart attack on Friday. Sort of ironic that his character was forced to give up his White House job after suffering a heart attack. He came back though, as a running mate for Matt Santos (Jimmy Smits).

The Emmy-winning actor starred on "LA Law" in the early '90s. He has also been featured in the films "Cop Land," "The Rock," "Sea of Love" and a slew of others.

There is no word on how his death will be handled on the show. "The West Wing" airs every Sunday at 8:00 p.m. (EST) on NBC. -- Rachel Cericola
