"Simpsons" Get Mideast Flavor

simpsons.jpg"The Simpsons" have a look, a feel and voices that have transcended generations of viewers. Hell, even "d'oh" has made it into the dictionary (look it up!). If you're like me, it's hard to see someone mess with perfection, regardless of when or if you think the show has jumped the shark.

Now Variety says that the most famous four-fingered family has gotten a bit of a makeover. Arab broadcaster MBC has sanitized the show, which launched earlier this month as part of its Ramadan lineup.

For "Al-Shamshoon," as they are known on MBC, the voices have changed, the themes have changed and even some of the names have changed. Most blasphemous for fans: beer and pork are a no-no. I can understand that it might not translate well and we don't want to offend anyone, but why bother picking it up? Don't we still have copies of "Shasta McNasty" kicking around that people can mess with?

Thankfully many Arab audiences can still catch the English version via satellite. To quote Homer himself: "No TV and no beer make Homer something something." Exactly my point! -- Rachel Cericola
