NBC Signs Aaron Sorkin

sorkin.jpgThe funniest thing I've seen Aaron Sorkin do in the past few years was when he got busted at that California airport for drugs. Now the Hollywood Reporter says that he's going to write comedy for a living. Well, maybe not.

NBC has won a bidding war for Sorkin's tongue-twisting title, "Studio 7 on the Sunset Strip," a new series he created with Thomas Schlamme ("The Larry Sanders Show"). The show is a look at the making of a sketch comedy series, sort of like "Saturday Night Live." From what I've read and heard, SNL's behind-the-scenes is not so pretty -- or funny. It sounds like an excellent premise. The show is not billed as a comedy, but its got to be funnier than "The West Wing."

The show was pitched to ABC, NBC and CBS, with NBC winning the rights. No word on casting yet. NBC, however, is banking on 13 episodes, and has put a penalty into the deal if it doesn't make it past pilot. Another wacky clause: The show is guaranteed a 9:00 or 10:00 p.m. timeslot on either Monday or Thursday. Talk about the presidential treatment. -- Rachel Cericola
