At least a few people are smiling in Hollywood this week -- and it's not from the Botox. TV Week says that FOX has picked up two of its new series: "Bones" and "The War at Home."
Despite fair-to-poor reviews, "The War at Home" seems to nestle nicely in its post-"Simpsons" timeslot -- which is quite a feat against ABC's tear-jerking "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." Michael Rapaport is sort of like a young Al Bundy. He's a bit of a racist and a bit of a homophobe, which I don't find all that offensive in this overly-PC world. The part that kills me is when he tries to channel John Ritter's "8 Simple Rules" dad to deal with his teenage kids.
Overall, it's a bit shocking that this show is working, especially with its stiff competition. While I think Rapaport rocks in the sidekick role, and is definitely worthy of a sitcom, it's hard to put him into the dad role. I still think of him as Dick Ritchie from "True Romance."
"The War at Home" airs Sundays at 8:30 p.m. (EST) on FOX.
"Bones" has faired a bit better -- with ratings and reviewers. It's sort of a sci-fi "CSI," and it doesn't hurt that the network has paired the show with the hit medical drama "House."
Inspired by real-life forensic anthropologist and best-selling author Kathy Reichs, the drama stars the handsome duo of Emily Deschanel ("Boogeyman") and David Boreanaz ("Angel").
"Bones" airs Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. (EST) on FOX. -- Rachel Cericola
