ABC Gives Ex-Con a Home

ty.jpgCash may be king, but a good tearjerker is worth millions to network TV. Unfortunately, USA Today says that a disabled lobsterman who received a $500,000 home on a recent episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" might not get the reaction that ABC is hoping for. See, he doesn't just have a sob story; he also has a record.

Doug Goodale of Wells, Maine, has quite a colorful past. Aside from losing his arm in a 1997 fishing accident, he also has a conviction for assault, two for drunk driving and one for armed (no puns please) robbery.

While I am all for rehabilitation, multiple convictions should pretty much take you out of the running for lifestyles of the rich and/or famous -- even if you're Bobby Brown. Even more fascinating is how every newspaper and magazine seems to have the ability to pull this kind of stuff out of the woodwork, but the networks never have enough resources to run a background check. Who is running the casting department? A room of chain-smoking monkeys?

It's unsure whether producers knew of Goodale's situation or just don't want to admit to utter stupidity. Goodale's ex-wife doesn't seem to have a problem blabbing to anyone that will listen. The people of Wells also want to spread the word -- and the townspeople always look so happy on that show! Something about the whole story, combined with the report that the show was recently crowned the king of TV by the Parents Television Council tugs at my heartstrings as well as my funnybone.

No word on when Goodale's episode will air, but you can catch "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" every Sundays at 8:00 p.m. (EST) on ABC. -- Rachel Cericola
