Memphis Cancels "Idol" Auditions

idol.jpgUSA Today is reporting that "American Idol" auditions in Memphis have been cancelled. Originally slated for Monday, FOX actually took the high-road and decided not to get in the way of the recovery efforts being made for Hurricane Katrina victims.

"Out of respect for the city's citizens, their public services, and the need to focus public safety efforts on the victims, this decision was made," a statement from FOX said. It's estimated that more than 10,000 people escaped the devastation to the Memphis region, many staying in hotels or with relatives.

The auditions will not be rescheduled. Instead, the show plans to return to Memphis next season. Producers expect to announce the addition of another city to this season's auditions very soon.

The fifth season of "American Idol" will premiere in January 2006 on FOX.
