Before you roll your eyes at another Jerry Lewis telethon -- or another Hurricane Katrina benefit story, for that matter -- the TV Squad is reporting that Labor Day's televised tradition will donate a portion of its proceeds to hurricane relief efforts.
"While the needs of 'my kids' are with us all year round, Hurricane Katrina is a national disaster on a scale that's difficult to comprehend," Lewis said in a statement. "We simply couldn't ignore the need to help."
The 21.5-hour marathon, which benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association, will steer its attention during the first four hours as well as the last four. All proceeds will go to the Salvation Army's hurricane relief. In addition, the MDA announced a donation of $1 million.
Last year, the telethon raised a record total of $60.5 million. The 40th annual MDA Telethon begins Sunday at 9:00 p.m. (EST) on selected stations. -- Rachel Cericola
