Mario Vasquez Gets a Deal

mario.jpgThe big story of this past season's "American Idol" was not Carrie Underwood versus Bo Bice. It wasn't even Paula Abdul's bizarre on- and off-screen behavior. When Mario Vasquez quit the show, it sent shockwaves through message boards around the Web. Was he gay? Did he hate Simon Cowell? Everyone was waiting for the skeletons to come crashing out of his closet. Apparently, the guy just had business savvy. New York Newsday is reporting that the former "Idol" contestant has signed a deal with Clive Davis' J Records.

The curly-haired cutie was a favorite to win early on, which would have locked him in with the same record company, but also a deal with the show's 19 Entertainment and Simon Fuller. Now on his own, Vasquez has landed himself representation with Arnold Steifel, the man behind Rod Stewart's career decisions. With any luck, he'll also be dating super-young models in no time.

Vasquez's debut album is expected to hit shelves in spring 2006.
