EchoStar is dishing out free satellite service. Just remember though: Nothing comes for free. The Hollywood Reporter says that the satellite provider is sponsoring the DISH City Makeover in hopes that one town will rename itself "DISH." If you can get your town officials drunk enough, you can get hundreds of free channels for the next 10 years.
If you think about it, so many companies are doling out cash to tattoo their names on people's heads or buying grilled cheeses that look like the Virgin Mary -- so this promotion really isn't too far out there. DISH really isn't that bad. It's probably better than most town names out there now. I mean, would you rather live in GoldenPalace.com, Virginia? How about Fresca, North Dakota?
The company is hoping a smaller town might want to enter. After all, a town of 1,000 people would run EchoStar about $4 million. That's some pricey promotion! The responses haven't been so hot so far, but there's still time. They're accepting submissions until November 1, 2005. The offer includes a receiver, standard installation and a programming package. -- Rachel Cericola
That is hilarious, naming a town after a business?
