There was plenty of buzz and it definitely had the eye of the tiger. It even had Rocky behind it. So why wasn't "The Contender" a knockout for NBC? The refs may still be scratching their heads over that one, but the reality show hasn't gone down for the count just yet. ESPN is promoting it as part of their 2006 lineup.
The show follows 16 boxing hopefuls as they live together, train together and rumble in the ring. It may not inspire the tear count of "Million Dollar Baby," but the sports network has some pretty high hopes, renewing the series for two subsequent seasons.
Casting is scheduled to begin immediately. "The Contender" will premiere in primetime on ESPN in April 2006. -- Rachel Cericola
