Changes on the Joey Set

joey.jpgWhen you look at the show "Joey" -- and I mean really look at it -- you probably don't think that the show's biggest problem is that there aren't enough characters.

Sadly, the show's writers seem to think so. Variety is reporting that the flailing sitcom is adding Miguel Nunez Jr. to this coming season.

Nunez is being added as a best buddy for our slightly retarded "friend." While I totally applaud that the show is headed in a direction that focuses more on its title character, adding to the cast might not be the best way to save a show that could actually have some promise.

Other changes include new roles, new sets and more Jennifer Coolidge, who's talent is completely wasted here. She's played a lot of hot chicks in the past -- what the hell is wardrobe and makeup doing to her? And the annoying voice? I thought Fran Drescher was on the WB.

At this point, the best course of action is to find new writers. It is frightening to believe that any of this show's crew might have worked on "Friends." So far, the planned changes don't make me want to laugh or even watch. It may, in fact, be the plotline -- but when it comes down to it, the show just isn't funny. When they're done cleaning house behind the scenes, think about re-testing some of the current cast members. Drea de Matteo was excellent on "The Sopranos." She has a knack for drama. Comedy? Not so much.

It also might be time for "very special guest star" Matthew Perry or David Schwimmer. Hell, even Lisa Kudrow could use some extra press for her HBO sitcom "The Comeback." The writers and network still think it's too early. Judging by last season, they should have had Chandler move in next door somewhere around the third episode.

Nunez does have a track record for comedy, starring in Scooby Doo and Juwanna Mann. I am willing to look away from his credits, but if you are interested, check out his IMDB.com entry for more information and photos.

I think they're right NOT to focus too much on Joey - his character's been around for more than ten years. I love Joey, but he's not strong enough on his own. The strength of Friends was that they could run a couple of storylines in one episode with different characters.

I hope they manage to polish off the 'magic formula' again - I'd hate to see Joey disappear...

I see what you are saying. Unfortunately, I just think the supporting cast is poor at best. They need to model a bit more after "Frasier." Even though he remained the main character, you actually cared about the rest of the cast...
