Constantine Gets Canned from American Idol

Constantine Maroulis Most of you probably know by now. E! Online and pretty much everyone else has reported what millions witnessed Wednesday night: Constantine Maroulis is out of the running for this season's "American Idol."

In a stunning twist, Maroulis was sent packing after a horrendous version of Nickelback's "How You Remind Me" the night before. Hundreds of fans flocked online to express their disgust. I, however, popped champagne and set off fireworks.

Not to kick the guy when he's down, but how Maroulis made it into the final 10 is still a mystery to me. How did I grow to despise this young aspiring singer? Let me count the ways ...

First, I, like many other fans, are glad that the "rocker" comparison has finally come to a screeching halt. Semi-long hair and a Jim "I'm too sexy for this Earth" Morrison stare does not a rocker make. I will say that his "best" performances were when he wasn't trying to portray something he obviously is not. In the end, it might have cost him his spot in the lineup.

Secondly, drop the rock star attitude. If you watch each of the other contestants perform, about 90 percent of the time, they are making contact with the audience -- like a true performer. Maroulis spent most of his stage time looking for the camera, and perfecting his "kicks." Um -- Poison called. They want their choreographer back.

Enough of my ranting. Don't worry my little Greek God Groupies. Maroulis should be just fine. Just ask his band, Pray for the Soul of Betty. MTV recently reported that the band was signed to Koch Records. It was unclear whether Maroulis is part of the deal. I could see him hitting the stage in "Jesus Christ Superstar" -- keep checking the dinner theaters in your area.

So who will become king of this ring? The verdict is still out. My money was on Bo Bice, assuming that the Smoking Gun report of his past drug busts don't get in his way. Arrests certainly haven't hurt fellow competitor Scott Savol so far, or a slew of other already-famous people for that matter.

The competition is actually heating up. Even if you don't care about the winner, tune in anyway. You can actually TiVo the exact moment in each episode when Paula Abdul loses her mind.

The next round of "American Idol" hits the air on Tuesday at 8 p.m. on FOX. -- Rachel Cericola
