American Idol Fodder

American Idol: Flowers for Paula

Lil-Rounds2.jpgI always wondered if Paula Abdul missed her first day job- performing. Well, the producers decided to let her back in the game, if only for one night. Though, this time she was working on the behind-the-scenes action.

In preparation for the results episode, "Idol" tasked our most expressive judge (last night she compared singing to bowling) with working out the choreography for the contestants' big dance number. Surprisingly she seemed to know what she was doing, as she put our spectacular seven through their paces. The resulting dance number was actually very well executed, by both her and the singers. (Remember, these kids didn't enter a dance competition. So the fact they could learn all the moves and then perform them in synch like they did was nothing short of a miracle!) I especially enjoyed the classic Michael Jackson moves, the slightly tacky disco clothes and the fact that no one was actually singing! (It was all very Milli Vanilli/Ashlee Simpson of them.)

But no one showed up for a disco revival did they? Nope, they wanted to know who was going home, and as Ryan dimmed the lights, it was once again time for America's results. First to stand was Lil Rounds. Ryan toyed with her emotions and then psyched her out by bringing her to the far side of the stage, before quickly revealing she was the first to go. And since everyone feels like singing after getting eliminated from a popular singing contest, they handed Lil a microphone. As it turns out, she gave a better performance than the night before. Randy babbled that this was "just the beginning" for her and Simon called himself a fan, but it was 'Lil' too late, and "Idol" showed her the door.

In between eliminations, we were treated to the night's first big musical performance. But unlike previous weeks where some famous singer on the Billboard 100 trots out their new song, "Idol" decided to take things back to the disco era. And so, just like relay runners passing a baton, we first got to hear Freda Payne with her hit "Band of Gold," followed by Thelma Houston with "Don't Leave Me This Way" and KC (of the Sunshine Band) with "Get Down Tonight." I'd say the only bright spot was Houston, while the other two performers sounded a little flat (or screechy). Maybe disco is dead after all.

The lights then dimmed again for the second time tonight, and Ryan wasted no time calling Kris to his feet. Everyone laughed about Paula's "he shops in the women's department" comment, and then Ryan told Kris he was safe. Then both Adam and Danny were asked to join Kris next week (big surprise!). But with only three people left, and two still left to fill out the Bottom 3, things weren't looking good for Anoop-Dogg, Allison "Kelly Clarkson's Little Sister" Iraheta and Matt "Am I Safe?" Giraud. We soon learned that Allison and Anoop were in the bottom. Poor Anoop, he's in the bottom so much they've probably reserved him a seat. Matt, on the other hand, was saved by the audience, which was a complete surprise! (Especially to me since I predicted he was going home. Wild!)

But before we could get to the final elimination, an old friend from last season stopped by to serenade us. It was time for Season 7's Runner-Up, David Archuleta, as he sang his newest single "Touch My Hand." This was my first time hearing this song (though I'd heard his other two singles on the radio and really enjoyed them). His lower register seemed a little off, but otherwise he sounded pretty good. The most surprising thing about Archie was his performance. I guess somewhere between losing the crown last year, then going on "Idol's" tour and then touring solo, he learned to be a little less awkward and little more animated. His performance was really good!! Plus, is it just me, or does Mr. Smiley seem like the most humble teen ever?

No one was smiling much after the commercial break as we got back down to business. Who would it be, Anoop or Allison? I wasn't sure who deserved to stay and who should have gone home. Both contestants have had their off nights, but both have been really awesome at times as well. In the end, though, I would have picked Anoop, since his constant presence in the Bottom Three was telling. And that's exactly who America picked to leave. Before he left, he sang his final ditty, and much like Lil, he did a million times better than the night before. Unfortunately, Anoop There He Goes!

So, here's to you Lil Rounds and Anoop Desai! Two contestants with unique names who rocked the house in different ways! Lil was the Rodney Dangerfield of "Idol," who got no respect from the judges at all. And despite Anoop-Dogg wearing a valet costume, he did not drive away with the "Idol" crown.

Did anyone see this coming? Should Matt have gone home, or did the right two get their walking papers? And as we head into the finals, who has the best chance of winning the crown: Adam, Danny, Kris, Matt or Allison? Post your comments below and come back here next Tuesday for more "Idol!" -Chris Sardelli

I agree Archie is the most humble guy ever and often he makes me want to be a better person. In Asia tour, interviewers were amazed by his genuine personalities and humility as well as his singing ability. His fans start to believe that HE IS NOT REAL. Some people call him ANGEL and even ALIEN. haha.

Chris Sardelli, you have an amusing writing style! I actually appreciate your humor because too many people take American Idol too seriously.

As for the show, I had a strong feeling Matt would stay, and although I thought the eliminations would be a little more shocking than it was, I strongly believed that Lil and Anoop should go home tonight.

Matt deserves to stay there till the end, or leave for something better contract.

David Archuleta is AMAZING. He always looks like he is having the time of his live and he gives it all he's got for every performance. As always, the most humble beautiful person, but what a constant change for the better in his stage presence/confidence. You can see how hard he has been working and it sure is paying off. LOVE HIM <3

I love love love loved David Archuleta's performance! I am his biggest fan EVEEEERR!! He is sooo talented! And has an UBER sense of style! Only David could wear a hoodie sweat shirt with a square shaped skinny tie and look that freakin' cute!!! He can do crazy things and soooo make them work! LOVE that about him (add it 2 the list)

I was sad 2 see Anoop (and kinda Lil) go but at least Danny is still around! I;m gonna predict the rest.

5 Matt
4 Allison
3 Kris
Runner-up Danny
Winner Adam
As much as I would love 2 see Danny win I just don't think he will. No the less I predict success for at minimum Allsion Kris Danny and Adam in the music industry.
