"American Idol" has been around for years. So, it was only a matter of time before things started to change. And it looks like the first of those changes is the departure of long-time executive producer Nigel Lythgoe.
Lythgoe, who's been at the helm of the music competition juggernaut since its inception, recently announced that he's leaving the show. According to Entertainment Weekly, Lythgoe's summer dance show, "So You Think You Can Dance," was recently renewed for another season, and has been doing so well that he's taking the competition worldwide.
In a statement, Lythgoe said: "Due to the huge success of "So You Think You Can Dance," my summer will be taken up by travels to South Africa, Australia and Canada to work on local versions of the show."
EW columnist Michael Slezak seems to think the change could do "Idol" some good, and allow the show to focus on more contemporary music. We'll see what happens when "American Idol" Season 8 premieres sans Lythgoe next January. --Chris Sardelli
