American Idol Fodder

American Idol: The Not-So-Great 8

Yes... we are down to one hour. I could not be happier, but it does seem like this season is just flying by.

Paula's outfit was downright hideous. Her hair and face actually looked cute, but her shirt was just butt-ugly. It had flowers, it had sparkles, it had the ability to cause seizures in small children. Doesn't she have a stylist?

Travis Tritt was in the house. Like all people in the "American Idol" house, he had something to plug. He has a new album. Since Randy Jackson is the producer, he must have been legally binded to appear. Here are the rest of tonight's highlights...

Blake Lewis
Blake Lewis
Blake's "character" in his opening video was sort of a downer. I like him as the beatbox guy, not the lame impressionist guy. I thought the beginning of the song sort of dragged, but it quickly picked up. The echo on his voice, however, wasn't doing him any favors. He may not be the most original singer on the planet, but Blake is original as far as "American Idol" is concerned. Even though I think this is a ladies' game this season, this guy is way talented.

Sanjaya Malakar
Sanjaya Malakar
Blake was a hard act to follow, and actually Sanjaya's performance made it look even harder. First of all, I think he ironed his hair this week. He also butchered John Mayer. His performance might have actually damaged John Mayer's album sales. I actually thought this kid had something during the audition stage. Now I can't get an image of Michael Jackson out of my head whenever I see or hear him -- and sadly, it's Michael Jackson now.

Sundance Head
Sundance Head
All Sundance revealed in his video was a lame sense of humor. What he should have revealed is his obvious fetish for wearing makeup. He had more makeup on tonight than I've seen some of the girls wear. His hair was nice and coiffed, but the makeup was caked on a bit too much, especially the foundation and eyeliner. That said, I did sort of like his rendition of "Jeremy." I thought it sounded like his vocals came in a bit late, but he really pulled it together after. Whether or not it was the best vocals, I really appreciate some of the contestants being a bit more contemporary this year and not recycling the same crap over and over.

Chris Richardson
Chris Richardson
Big revelation: Chris is cute chubby or thin. I am always more excited when a singer tries something different or gets the audience dancing, but Simon was right -- he sold it. However, I was more interested in yet another heated exchange between Simon and Seacrest. What's with all of their lovers' spats lately?

Jared Cotter
Jared Cotter
He's dreamy and a good dresser, but wow -- I just wasn't feeling it tonight, dawg. The slower parts of his Stevie Wonder song were more suited to his voice, but during the peppier parts, he sounded sort of flat. While I always appreciate Simon's faces during Paula comments, I have to say... tonight she gave the most constructive comments in her entire judging career.

Brandon Rogers
Brandon Rogers
Something about Brandon's classical piano playing was extremely hot... maybe it's because his face was attached to the hands that were playing. This guy has it, man. I don't think his song choice really highlighted his vocal abilities tonight, but it was a still a pretty good performance. He did need more melody, but I don't think Simon has anything to worry about. Brandon will be back.

Phil Stacey
Phil Stacey
I wasn't digging Phil's hat this week. It looked way too big for his tiny head. It just didn't come off as cool, which I am sure was the look he was going for. However, his hideous wardrobe choices just couldn't distract me from his bad performance. Phil seems like a nice guy, a humble guy and a family guy. However, he also doesn't seem like an "American Idol" guy.

Chris Sligh
Chris Sligh
After one more peek at Travis Tritt and the hot chick next to him (Mrs. Tritt?), it was time for Chris to shine. Paula was very out of character tonight; instead of being the usual cheeleader, she was very vocal. Even more amazing, she was pretty right on, which includes her comments to Chris. It's not that his performance was bad, but it just wasn't good either.

Carrie Underwood will be performing on Thursday night's results show. If I had to bet, I would guess that Sanjaya and Phil will be the least excited about her appearance, because they will be going home. -- Rachel Cericola

I totally agree about Brandon. He is too cute.
