American Idol: Top 12 Girls

After sleeping on last night's performance (or passing out on it, in Paula's case), the guys were sort of forgettable. I know I enjoyed some of the performances from last night, but I'd probably have to look at my recap to remember any of them.

The girls seemed to fair much better tonight, with only a few having an off night. That's OK; it makes the elimination process that much easier. Here's the breakdown...

Stephanie Edwards
Stephanie Edwards
At first I thought that Stephanie's performance was "just alright for me." It had its ups and downs, but when that girl hit the deck and kicked it out the end, she definitely made herself a major contender. This girl has passion, and she's willing to pop a kneecap in front of millions to prove it.

Amy Krebs
Amy Krebs
She's cute and she has the vocal talent, but Amy's performance was just too boring tonight. Simon said she was forgettable, and I would almost agree, except that she stood a full head taller over Seacrest. That's pretty memorable. Unfortunately, that does not make you an "American Idol" -- althought maybe it should!

Leslie Hunt
Leslie Hunt
Oof. This performance seemed to bring the show to a screeching halt. Aretha Franklin is not easy to pull off, as we all witnessed here tonight. Leslie can sing (as all of them should be able to), but she sort of dragged out "Natural Woman," which is an extremely painful feeling during an already lengthy 2-hour show.

Sabrina Sloan
Sabrina Sloan
I wasn't that impressed with this girl's Hollywood performance, which isn't very fair of me -- since Fox only showed tiny snippets of that entire part of the competition. However, within the first few notes, Sabrina made herself known as a serious singing force to be reckoned with.

Antonella Barba
Antonella Barba
Antonella had a very tough act to follow. Her Aerosmith cover didn't exactly help. She is absolutely beautiful, and I do believe that she has talent. However, that talent is not singing the lyrics of Steven Tyler (hey few people have those superpowers). However, her performance did prompt the best line of the night, when Simon compared Antonella's performance to Seacrest trying to tackle the news. Zing!

Jordin Sparks
Jordin Sparks
This chick is only 17? Wow wee. She could really "blow," as Randy often says -- and I really hate when he uses that expression, so I must have been mesmerized. I didn't like the ending, but it's hard to end any song on "American Idol" and make it sound good.

Nicole Tranquillo
Nicole Tranquillo
Nicole should have worked less on her dance moves and more on her singing. To call it forgettable would actually be a positive thing. It definitely was memorable. I will remember it as the evening's worst performance. I was going to be upset if any of the judges actually liked it. Of course, Paula did -- which means it was really bad.

Haley Scarnato
Haley Scarnato
Haley mentioned in her intro that she was not willing to settle for less or something like that. Then why did she pick such stereotypical crap for her song? She even had a Celene-style outfit on. Sorry Celene fans, but you need to step up to the plate if you plan to make it past tonight.

Melinda Doolittle
Melinda Doolittle
I really liked Melinda from the get-go. Her experience in the business as a background singer was definitely shining through tonight, from her movements to her wide vocal range. She even had Simon gushing. Hopefully she will go far in the competition.

Alaina Alexander
Alaina Alexander
Two notes into "Brass in Pocket" it was apparent this was an extremely poor song choice for Alaina. Chrissy Hynde is a tough voice to duplicate, and if you can't do it exactly like her, you should probably steer clear of The Pretenders, except while driving. Her attitude at the end wasn't exactly making me feel bad for her either.

Gina Glocksen
Gina Glocksen
I'm not sure if Gina has a little punk streak in her, or it's just the streaks in her hair that make it seem that way. However, she picked the most anti-punk song in "All By Myself." It actually worked for her though, and she is not even one of my favorites. She hit the big notes perfectly, and actually chose a nice showcase for her vocals.

LaKisha Jones
LaKisha Jones
The single mother chose to parallel herself with Oscar hopeful Jennifer Hudson. Wow did it pay off. I hate when the judges claim that a certain performance is the best of the night or greatest of the season, but LaKisha might actually be able to make that claim.

Two men and two women are going home tomorrow. However, they will make all 24 contestants sweat it out for one hour, and one performance by season three winner Fantasia Barrino. -- Rachel Cericola
