American Idol: Top 10 Girls

I hate when a show starts off talking about how great people look. I know it's part of the package, but let's remember that it's a singing competition people. Also, if the first comment out of a judge's mouth has anything to do with how great you look on a given night, it means that you sucked.

Some of tonight's contestants looked a lot better than others. Here's the lowdown...

Gina Glocksen
Gina Glocksen
Each week I find myself wanting to see Gina rock out, but Heart was not exactly what I was looking for. This was the least rockin' Heart song of all of the Heart songs. When will someone bring the "Barracuda?" The other judges jumping on Simon is just getting old. He really hit the nail on the head by asking who exactly Gina is. I know I am confused.

Alaina Alexander

When I heard that Alania was doing the Dixie Chicks, I was hoping for "Goodbye Earl." She needs to inject a little life into her performances. Unfortunately, I don't think she'll get the chance. Overall, the performance fell apart at the chorus and I can't imagine she will make it through another week. Her eyerolling at Simon didn't make her seem humble at all, and then she backpedaled, asking for help after they were finished. Didn't she listen to their comments the first time around? Go home and watch it on video.

LaKisha Jones
LaKisha Jones
After last week's power performance, I was worried that it would be hard for LaKisha to go anywhere but down. She didn't belt it out like last week, but she definitely did a great job with Gladys Knight. Simon isn't exactly a fashion plate and I usually trust his judgement, but was her outfit really that bad? I didn't see what he was seeing.

Melinda Doolittle
Melinda Doolittle
I really like Melinda, but was sort of disappointed that she dedicated her song to two stylists. Sure they are her friends, but they are also her "Gayles." I like seeing people and thinking they are not so put together, that they are a diamond in the rough, that they are one outfit away from being a superstar. That said, Melinda does seem very humble and she is, without a doubt, very talented. Hopefully she will go the distance.

Antonella Barba
Antonella Barba
Antonella had quite a week -- not on the show, but in the press. I was really hoping that she would have a killer week just so she could basically give the finger to all of her haters. However, she chose Celene, and in my book, that's one strike right out of the box. That aside, I just thought she seemed so much more talented in the audition stage. I hope she doesn't get the axe this week, just because I am hoping that her recent news won't be what gives her the boot. Not sure I appreciated her attitude at Simon at the end. Take your criticism, ask questions, and move on I say. However, I do think she was a lot better than last week, and the judges were way harsh.

Jordin Sparks
Jordin Sparks
This 17-year-old girl (yes I need to keep mentioning that) puts a lot of the contestants to shame. She sings great, she's cute (and has a little America Ferrera thing going on), and the fact that she was emotionable about her performance didn't hurt her one bit.

Stephanie Edwards
Stephanie Edwards
Does Paula ever have anything negative to say? I mean I like Stephanie and she was good. I could be wrong, but I thought she sounded like her vocals didn't match the music. I know she is a serious contender, but there was just something about it that rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe I need to go back and watch it again.

Leslie Hunt
Leslie Hunt
Something about Leslie's speaking voice bothers me. It's like it's half Valley Girl, half hippie. That wouldn't bother me as much if her singing voice didn't grate on me too. I really liked her song choice, but I don't think she did enough with it. The acapella was decent, but the scatting was bland. It was a big improvement over last week though, but I would be surprised if she survives another week or two.

Haley Scarnato
Haley Scarnato
I couldn't figure out what I thought of Haley's performance. I appreciated that she was uptempo, but her dancing and hand gestures were a cross between stiff and manic. Randy might have summed it up by saying that the song seemed to highlight the back-up singers a bit more than Haley. I did feel bad for her when she started crying, but man -- it's only the second week! She had better toughen up. However, the tears could help her survive another week.

Sabrina Sloan
Sabrina Sloan
Sabrina sent out this week's final shout-out to grandma. It was also Paula's last opportunity to clap like a trained seal. Is she looking for a "special thanks" credit on someone's album or what? Sabrina is cute and is talented. I'm not sure if she will go all the way, but she will definitely be around for at least a few more weeks.

Tomorrow we give the last 30 minutes of our week to "American Idol" and get the results. Judging by what we've seen over the past two weeks, I am guessing this is a girl's game. -- Rachel Cericola
