American Idol: The Final 5

paris2.jpgNo guests, no filler. Tonight the contestants had to sing two songs -- one from their birth year and one from the current Billboard charts. There was no time to spare, so they got right down to business.

Elliott Yamin kicked off the show with George Benson, which was perfect for him. It allowed him to show off his vocal talents and even a little personality. I didn't dig the Eminem hand gestures though -- especially during a George Benson song.

His second song brought the house down a bit. It was a good song -- although I have no clue what song it was. (Can someone help me out here?) I did think the same thing that Simon said about its subject matter -- although I'm not ready for Elliott to go just yet!

I felt so old when Paris performed Prince's "Kiss." I thought she did exceptionally well. She was shaking her thang and proved that she isn't just a good jazz singer; she's a good performer as well.

Mary J. Blige was a great choice for Paris. I think she really needed a week like this one. I know her personality turns some people off, but based on tonight's performances, she should have no problem making it through this week.

Chris sang "Renegade." I thought he was great, but his voice dragged in a few spots -- like it couldn't keep up with the music. Did that make it a bad performance? Hell no! This is me being very nitpicky. It was a great song selection. I am a fan, but I think the strobe light guys must be voting for this guy repeatedly every week. Without him, they would all be out of a job.

The second performance really reinforced that Chris needs to be fronting a killer band. Randy said he thought that his voice was giving out, but I honestly wrote it off as part of his sound.

Katharine McPhee wasn't winning any votes with her outfit tonight -- and "Against All Odds" certainly didn't help. This was possibly her worst performance ever. She sounded like she was off-key in some spots and it was completely hammy. If I ever had McPhever, I am feeling much better now, thanks.

I was happy that Simon corrected himself, because he did originally say that it was her best performance. No one wants to stake claim to that comment.

"Black Horse in a Cherry Tree" worked a lot better for Katharine, but she really couldn't go anywhere but up after her first performance. What was with sweeping the floor the entire time? I found it completely distracting and felt like I was watching a midget perform.

Taylor's shirt was not working for me tonight. What was working was his voice. Was there ever a guy that "Play That Funky Music" was more appropriate for? The end got a bit crazy. I was waiting for one of James Brown's guys to come out from the back and wrap him in a robe and escort him off stage.

Great comment from Simon: "I like the end when you collapsed."

"Something" was a tough one for Taylor. First of all, George Harrison is a tough act to follow. Second, he was stretching the expectations of the audience with the theme on this one. Both of these facts sort of made the whole thing blow up in his face. He worked it out by the end though, and I think his personality will keep him going for yet another week.

Tonight was a close call. Even though I think they both did well, I think it's going to be between Elliott and Paris. However, I would like to see Katharine hit the road -- I just won't hold my breath on that one. -- Rachel Cericola

Mac's Rambling Thoughts from this Episode

• Is there a way Elliott could be entered in a vocals-only "Idol"? He'd be the runaway winner.

• Did Paris dub herself "Princess P" or is that a name Seacrest came up with? I ask because if it's the former, that pisses me off. If it's the latter, I can't fault her.

Chris did something I've never seen before: he brought the mic stand onto the second stage. The people in the front row are fortunate he didn't break into a Steven Tyler-esque twirl.

• There was no threat of Katharine repeating her wardrobe malfunction this week. The dress she wore during her first song looked like a barrel: she was strapped in above and below.

• Katharine's version of "Against All Odds" was horrible. Scott Savol's Season 4 version was infinitely better.

• I think I once owned Taylor's paisley shirt. I probably shouldn't admit that.

• Remember how Taylor toned down his dancing over the last few weeks? Yeah, that's over. He WORKED IT OUT during "Play that Funky Music," capping his manic performance by squirming on his back. I think we may have watched him go insane before our very eyes.

• Daniel Powter owes every single ounce of his success to "Idol." For a guy who's never been on the show, his song "Bad Day" has gotten an ungodly amount of publicity.

• Elliott's version of "Home" (Michael Buble) was way too fast -- way, way too fast. It's supposed to be a languid song with lots of breathing room. Elliott still managed to sound good, but the arrangement didn't do him any favors.

• Paris did a decent job with Mary J. Blige, but I have a hard time looking past her age when she's singing about emotional turmoil and passion. It's also hard to take someone seriously when they're dressed in camouflage and shiny pants (is there a war on the moon?).

• I fear for Chris' vocal chords. One more "rock growl" and those things might snap.

• Taylor sang what I believe is the first Beatles song in "Idol" history ("Something") and he did a phenomenal job. I have no idea if it will resonate with the younger "Idol" crowd, but the older folks out there (including me -- so sad) will eat that stuff up. -- Mac Slocum
