Someone leaked tonight's "American Idol" set list to USA Today, and Sher -- being a rockin' American Idol Fodder reader -- has leaked it to us.
Let me say off the bat -- I think tonight's theme is a huge mistake. That's me putting it nicely. It's not a knock on Queen. It's just a bizarre band to pick for a theme night, isn't it? Why not have Moody Blues night next?
That said, here is a peek at what to expect. I can only hope that my predictions (at least some of them) will be wrong:
Ace Young will sing "We Will Rock You." He will need to completely change the arrangement to pull this one off. Otherwise, the judges will say it's a one-note wonder that doesn't show off any range.
Bucky Covington is going to take on "Fat Bottomed Girls." Frankly, I think Bucky might have snagged one of the best songs in the lot. If he ever had any personality, here is his chance to show it off.
Once again, Chris Daughtry picks the perfect song in "Innuendo." He's going to be sporting the hard rock thing again tonight, kids. If you don't like it, don't say I didn't warn you.
Elliot just can't stay away from the ballad, so he's doing "Somebody to Love." Granted, Queen does it little up-tempo. I see him slowing it down -- and I think that might be a bad move. If he follows the flow of the original, I think it could be a good week for him.
Katharine McPhee said something about this week "being fun." Maybe that was taken out of context because her selection, "Who Wants to Live Forever," has to be the least fun Queen song -- ever. Not saying it's not a good song, but unless she has that magical "Kelly moment" (as Mac calls it), she is going to fade into the rest of tonight's performances.
I can't believe that Kellie Pickler chose "Bohemian Rhapsody." Aside from it being very difficult and full of various melodies, she runs a serious risk of being compared to the version that Constantine did last season. Not good. She had better hope that the back-up singers have her back.
Not sure what made Paris Bennett pick "The Show Must Go On." It is uplifting, which might work in her style's favor. I think this is going to be a tough week for her though.
Despite being a bit overdone, this week will be Taylor Hicks week after he does "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." Of course, I thought he was going to crush "Country Roads," so who knows? Just please, Taylor -- for the love of god -- incorporate some dance moves.
"American Idol" kicks off tonight at 8:00 p.m. (EST) on Fox. -- Rachel Cericola
Moody Blues?
Super idea , Rache-eal!!
Best band there EVER was!
....AND SONGS!!
Thanks for the shout out, Rachel!
ITA that Bucky's got the best pick of the lot. His best bet is to have fun with the song and show his personality - just as you said, Rachel.
Interestingly enough, I read in a Mandisa interview that if she had made it to this week, she was going to sing 'Who Wants To Live Forever' because she knew it from 'Highlander' and said she loved the song. Now, Katharine's going to sing it instead, I see.
I have to say - when I read that Kellie was singing 'Bohemian Rhapsody', I actually busted out laughing, hard, at my desk. What?!? ALL those Queen songs and this is what she chose? Oh, Lord.
ITA again, Rachel (there's a pattern here - LOL) that Queen Night isn't a great idea. I love the band, but these contestants singing their songs is a whole different story. In fact, we could do away with 'Theme Nights' altogether and I'd be totally fine with it. I shudder to think of what next week's will be. Who has a new album coming out and needs publicity? That seems to be the criteria. *sigh*
