American Idol Fodder

American Idol: Goodbye Melissa, Hello Top 11

Melissa McGhee Rachel is enjoying a much-deserved night out, so I'll be handling the "Idol" comments this week.

• The one-hour on Tuesdays, half-hour on Wednesdays is the perfect set-up for "Idol." I love the show, but I don't need three days of Idol mania.

• With the results show, never before have three judges done so little and been paid so much. What a gig. Just sit and sip mystery drinks from oversized Coke cups ... how do I get a job like that?

• Tonight's episode brought out the first Ford ad of the season. Remember these things? This week, we watched our Top 12 camping and cajoling while singing Toad the Wet Sprocket songs in the deep woods. Who comes up with this crap?

• I'd like Congress to work on a law that bans once-legendary singers from performing songs from "their latest album."

• Quip of the night goes to my wife: "I wish the judges would comment on Stevie Wonder's performance."

It'd probably go something like this:

Paula: You make the world smile with your face and your song makes me happy and I'm just ... just so ... thrilled and amazed and you're ... and you look great tonight!" [Seal Clap]

Simon: If I'm being honest, that sounded like something you'd hear at an amusement park.

Ace and Lisa in the bottom three. That's a shocker. Even more shocking: Kevin made it through to the next round. Chicken Little has mad staying power.

• Who, in the name of God, is voting for Bucky? Is there a massive Covington contingent we don't know about? Does Rocky have a hook-up with the phone company?

• I'm glad America punished Melissa for screwing up the lyrics last night. She deserved to be in the bottom three and she deserved to go home. I just wish she had intentionally flubbed her "goodbye" performance.

• Is it wrong that I really enjoy that "Bad Day" song? -- Mac Slocum

How in the world is Kevin staying in the running. He reminds me of one of the kids that everyone picked on in school. His "Part Time Lover" performance was pathetic. I'm sorry for sounding harsh, but he sounded very nervous and uncomfortable on stage. I respect Paula's opinion on things, but she said he was able to stay in time with the song, and I totally disagree. I thought he was behind the music several times. His dance moves reminded me of the character Steve Urkle from the TV show "Family Matters". He just doesn't seem to me like someone who could possibly win American Idol.

I'm glad that Melissa went home for not remembering her lines, but who in the hell is this Kevin character? He SUCKS!! To top it off he thinks he really is a sex symbol, he needs to get SENT HOME, HE ABSOLUTELY HAS NO SKILLZ AT ALL.

Could not be more thrilled that Melissa was voted off. I am sick of her bad fashion sense. She is not a horrible singer, but that doesn't make her good either.

However, I am deeply disturbed that Kevin has made it through once again. I agree with Juan... Every week, he seems so nervous. I thought that was fine the first time they had to sing live. I let it slide. Now it's just annoying.

To echo everyone else, I'm glad Melissa went home.

However.....Ace going into the Bottom Three shocked the hell out of me, especially when I realized that his Bottom Three spot meant Kevin was safe. WHAT!? HOW is that kid sailing through every week? I don't get it.

I did a mental Dance Of Joy when Lisa went Bottom Three, I must admit. I was surprised, but in a good way. Not a fan of hers.

I never did hear Ryan say what next week's theme would be. Did he not announce it, or did I miss it?

Well I know how Kevin made it through, the girl sitting next to me at work said her sister voted 200 times. Thats the problem, he is from Long Island, those crazy jerks are voting like crazy out there!

-- 5. Posted by: Jen at March 16, 2006 9:52 AM

Interesting, Jen. I wonder why he's getting all those votes? Probably because he's the hometown boy (which is understandable). It surely can't be based on talent.

Just read that Kevin is the pick at, so that may explain some of the votes, too. Personally, I think is crap and disrespectful to the contestants that deserve to stay in the competition, and I can't imagine anyone having enough time to waste to actually sit on the phone and call in for who they perceive to be the worst singer. That's just silly.

-- 6. Posted by: Sher at March 16, 2006 10:06 AM

Oh lord, is that vote for the worst thing back again? I'm convinced Scott Savol is the man behind the curtain on that site ;)

-- 7. Posted by: mac at March 16, 2006 10:10 AM

Oh that vote for the worst site is just stupid, those people really must be bored. I mean I hate myself for voting at all, but to spend your time voting for the worst is really pathetic. As for the Hometown Kevin vote, well Long Island is huge and the people there LOVEEEEEEEE everything Long Island! That alone could take Kevin to the finals, I guess I will have to put all my effort into voting for Chris!

-- 8. Posted by: Jen at March 16, 2006 10:33 AM

LOL! Yes, Mac, it's back - unfortunately. Their female pick is Kellie, apparently, because they think she's full of crap and is pretending to be someone she's not, and Kevin's the male pick. I really don't think anyone's paying much attention to the fact that Kellie's a pick of theirs because she's actually getting legit votes. As for Kevin......well, that's another story. ;)

-- 9. Posted by: Sher at March 16, 2006 10:35 AM

Hey Jen - just saw your last comment and I'm right there voting for Chris with you, girl! Whoo hoo!

-- 10. Posted by: Sher at March 16, 2006 10:36 AM

Seriously Chris is awesome, he doesn't sing ballads and he exciting to watch. All the past American Idols have sucked (besides Kelly) because they they are too boring for radio.
Ok and I like Kelly, I mean she is cute and all. But she keeps interrupting Ryan and the judges, she needs to settle down a bit with that.

-- 11. Posted by: Jen at March 16, 2006 11:03 AM

Oh, hell.

Next week is 'Songs of the 50s'.

I'm already dreading this. LOL!

-- 12. Posted by: Sher at March 16, 2006 11:18 AM

Songs of the '50s? Nothing good will come of this. *NOTHING*

-- 13. Posted by: mac at March 16, 2006 11:25 AM

You're probably right, Mac. This sucks. *sigh*

But I know something that sucks worse!

Guess who the musical guest is next week?!

Wait for it....

Barry Manilow.

-- 14. Posted by: Sher at March 16, 2006 11:39 AM

Oh nooooo.

I wonder if Bucky has any Barry in his music collection ;)

-- 15. Posted by: mac at March 16, 2006 11:40 AM

Oh NO!!! Will Chris be able to sing a 50's song, I'm really worried!

-- 16. Posted by: Jen at March 16, 2006 11:58 AM

LOL Mac - I would be disturbed to find out that Bucky owned a Barry Manilow album!

Jen, I think Chris will do great. He'll find something that suits him and he'll rock it. I think he's done great in picking his songs, so I bet he'll be awesome!

-- 17. Posted by: Sher at March 16, 2006 12:18 PM

What the heck does Barry Manilow have to do with 50s music? I guess I will have to wait and see.

As for Chris: This will be a great week for him. SO MANY rock songs to choose from...
