American Idol: Top 12 Girls

brenna.jpgTonight's performances were good, but is anyone else just slightly offended/pissed that Fox wants me to devote FIVE hours of my week to "American Idol?"

I know who won't be American Idol: Paula's hairstylist. This was possibly the worst TV hair ever. She should really think about firing someone for tonight's appearance. But it wasn't all about Paula, although she was kicking off the finals with some chair dancing and a few standing Os. Who could blame her? Here's a look at how the hopefuls did tonight:

Mandisa must be on her way to superstardom; she's already dropped her last name. She's also got the superstar hand motions, but more importantly, she's got talent. I'm not a fan of Heart, but I am a fan of Mandisa.

Kellie Pickler was shown crying -- three times -- before she even hit the stage, so despite her cuteness, I went in with a sour attitude. Martina McBride didn't exactly help. The girl can definitely sing, but I think the key was just a bit too low for her. Plus, Mandisa was just a hard act to follow.

Becky O'Donohue is the hot chick. Don't think so? She was in Maximfor chrissakes. Tonight, though, she was a bit of a spaz. I don't really have to say she can sing. I mean, they all can to some degree -- otherwise, they wouldn't have made it this far. Bad choice of song though. It may have been great for her living room, but not so great for her first live performance.

Ayla Brown is my hometown girl, but there is something about her that makes me want to see her leave. I think it's because she's such a winner. Like some people will go back to waitressing; she will be a basketball superstar. Her performance was also just a little boring. I feel like I've seen it already in like 50 other "AI" performances.

Paris Bennett is my number one-pick to take the whole thing. For a 17-year-old, this kid was like a seasoned professional -- pointing to audience members and be-bopping around. Her voice almost brings tears to my eyes every single time -- and in a good way. She's still the tops in my book.

Stevie Scott says she's a standout. Funny because I didn't even remember her until she started talking in that squeaky voice. Her key was a little too high for me. I think it might have been a little too high for dogs too. I'm sure she'd do great in the opera circuit (although not with this song), but I just don't see mainstream America going for it. She said she could "bring it." Unfortunately, it's probably too late. After all, half of the girls are going home. Does she think people will want to vote to see if and when she brings it?

Brenna Gethers is not kidding herself when she says she's a standout, but not in such a great way. She's sort of like this season's Mikala. Her rendition of "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" reminded me a bit of someone singing at a wedding. When she belted it out, she did it well. Unfortunately, there weren't enough of those moments.

Heather Cox has a little Carrie Underwood in her, which might not be a good thing. She also picked an "AI" song, which could also make a lot of people out there think they are watching a rerun. I thought she was decent, but the backup singers were drowning her out a bit too much.

Melissa McGhee was actually really surprising. She could belt it out. I would have liked to see her (and a few of the other contestants) move around a little more. I mean I'm not looking for a lap dance, but just a bit of stage presence.

Lisa Tucker didn't have to move; she could have levitated for all I care. Her voice was mesmerizing. She definitely deserves a pass to the next round.

Kinnik Sky was good, but I just don't see her as a real standout. She was dressed very nicely, but I don't think it's a good sign whenever they tell a contestant how nice they look.

Katharine McPhee is a favorite among gambling circles and tonight's performance was proved that they aren't as crazy as you might think. Her voice was great, but I would like to see her interact with the audience more and the camera less.

I found it hard to believe that all of the judges were surprised by almost everyone's performances. Was that a nice way of saying a lot of them were bad or did they just not remember picking any of these people?

Everyone did a decent job, but if I was betting money, my final six girls would be: Mandisa, Paris Bennett, Kellie Pickler, Melissa McGhee, Lisa Tucker and Katharine McPhee. -- Rachel Cericola
