American Idol: Boston Auditions

sandecki.jpgThis is our last stop on the "American Idol'" audition ride. Thank god -- I have been ready to get off or throw up for about three episodes now.

I wish I could say that I had some hometown pride, but much of this episode made me want to bury all of my Boston sportswear in the backyard. A few highlights:

• Ghost said he wasn't sure how to describe his style. How about "non-existent?"

• Ayla Brown as A-OK. Then again, it wasn't hard to follow Ghost. She had better work on some non-basketball moves if she hopes to make it past Hollywood.

• Not being able to sing is out. The new William Hung will be the person that can curse the most during their brief, but meaningful exit.

• Don't remember the next girl's name, but maybe I would have if the title of the show was "American Stripper."

• "Working for the Weekend" transcends all musical genres!

• Do you think the guy crying on the cell phone to his mom is sad that was filmed? I sort of felt like he should have at least gotten his 2 minutes of singing time if he was going to have 2 minutes of humiliation time.

• Ken (the Cher guy) waited for 12 hours to do that?

• My second reference to GWAR since the auditions started (who would have thought?): That guy in the "Joy to the World" montage was the best thing on tonight's show, hands down -- and not because he had even a glimmer of singing ability.

• I know Clay Aiken had a bit of a makeover during his "Idol" stint. Can they make over that Claymate's personality too?

Enough with wasting my time: let's get on with the blood, sweat and real tears. -- Rachel Cericola

Mac's Rambling Thoughts from This Episode

• No offense to all the well-meaning foreign "Idol" contestants, but I think it is very hard for singers with heavy accents to do well -- even if they can wail. Resorting to a striptease doesn't help, either.

• An operatic version of "Working for the Weekend" -- never saw that one coming.

• The O'Donahue twins are pretty ... and they're insane. They move the same way. They talk the same way. They make the same gestures. They have the same job. They're the Borg.

• There's a special place in Heaven for Holly Corrente. She sings to old folks and people with disabilities and, even better, when she got a "no" from the judges, she took it graciously.

• Kenneth Maccarone -- Oh for the love of god. A Cher impersonator? A Cher impersonator? Worse still, Kenneth sounded more like Jack McFarland impersonating Cher rather than Cher herself. He's an impersonator of an impersonator. Pathetic.

• A new haircut would make Kevin Covais' life so much easier. That little nub doesn't accentuate his, uh, features.

• I'm trying to understand how they assemble the "bad song montages." Do you think the horrific contestants are asked to sing a specific song? I mean, how many people come to an audition with "Joy to the World" lined up as their go-to tune?

• Mike Sandecki -- Being a Bostonian, I feel it's important to note that this Clay Aiken wannabe is from Washington, D.C. Boston lays absolutely no claim to him or his weak bladder.

• After 2,000 hours of audition shows I can't believe the "Idol" producers had the audacity to close out this episode with a five-minute audition recap. You sick bastards. -- Mac Slocum

HOLLY CORRENTE should be going to "HOLLY"WOOD. She was fantastic! A Sweet, girl with a dynamite voice, and she took the rejection from Simon, Paula & Randy in a very upbeat way.(No whining, or cursing) I think American Idol should rethink the Holly Corrente judgement. She is, in my opinion, the true next AMERICAN IDOL. GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE!!
