This week was full of awesome activities for the teams. Let's get right to the review.
As usual, teams left in the last pit stop in the order that they arrived. The clue they received sent them from the Valley of the Dead to the town of San Pedro De Atacama. They will drive themselves there and search for the church that bears its name. It is only a 4-mile drive, so there is nothing really exciting for this trip. Once teams arrive at the church, the clue tells them to travel 800 miles to the city of Puerto Montt. They received $37 for this leg of the race. When they land they will choose a marked car and drive themselves to the town of Metri. They are going to a fish hatchery (fishery?) to find their next clue. Hmmm, I am guessing that the next task has something to do with fish, how about you?
Rob & Amber try and succeed to find an all-night travel agency. The rest of the teams head strait for the airport. Rob & amber manage to get themselves on a flight that will arrive at their destination at 12:55. They now head to the airport. Teri & Ian form a loose alliance with Dustin & Kandace to get to the church and then airport. (Nothing really significant though.) Uchenna & Joyce arrive at the airport and see that all of the lines already have racers waiting in them. They decide to find a hotel and try to get tickets booked online and thus step ahead of the teams in line. Joe & Bill, Eric & Danielle and Danny & Oswald give their credit card info to Uchenna & Joyce so that they can book flights for all of them if it works. Side note: we finally find out that TAR has supplied them all with credit cards to purchase airline tickets when they needed them. We all suspected as much, but now we know. Uchenna & Joyce do find a hotel and do book tickets. The problem is that there are only 2 sets of tickets available on the 12:55 arriving flight. Uh oh. How do they choose which team to get tickets for? Apparently, it turns out to not be a problem as Joe & Bill are the only ones that furnished them with their card's security code. You know, that three-digit number on the BACK of your credit card that some vendors ask for? So, lucky for Joe & Bill, Uchenna & Joyce get them the set of tickets that are available. They reluctantly explain to Eric & Danielle and Danny & Oswald why they were not able to get them tickets, but not that there we no other tickets left. Rob & Amber sneak into the airport and wait in the dark terminal so that they do not "show their hand" to the other teams. Eric & Danielle manage to get tickets on the 12:55 flight too. The rest of the teams are on the 1:55 flight.
Both flights have a layover in Santiago. The ones that did not get on the early flight run for ticket counters to try and get on the earlier flight. This causes a shouting match between Teri & Ian and Charla & Mirna. Teri & Ian were there first and Mirna tried to shout her way in. Well, Teri & Ian will have none of it. It never ceases to amaze me that teams complain all the time about people jumping ahead and being rude when they ALL do it. At every opportunity. Without fail. DUH! It is a race. Just keep going and get over it. (Stepping off my soapbox now). Unfortunately, they earlier flight does not have any seats left on it.
The first four teams arrive and get in their cars. Uchenna & Joyce hire a taxi to get them to their destination. Eric & Danielle and Joe & Bill follow. Rob & Amber have turned off somewhere and are momentarily lost and behind for the first time in a long time. Upon arriving at the fishery, their clue is a ROADBLOCK with the question "Who can handle a slippery situation?" Now, if I were at a fishery and was looking at a clue that asked about handling a slippery situation, I would assume that it had something to do with handling fish, but maybe that is just me. The team member chosen must immerse himself or herself in an 1800-gallon breeding tank, catch and transfer all 80 fish to the breeding tank that is down the hill. Not being a fish connoisseur, I can't tell you exactly what kind of fish they were in the tank, but some kind of flounder type flat fish. No, there wasn't even one piranha! Danielle seems to be afraid of fish, so I am wondering why she chose to take the challenge. Eric yells at her the whole time. He also, as Rob notes, takes delight in mentioning various parts of her body in vaguely suggestive ways. What it is with young guys? David is equally frightened of fish, but after a slow start, he builds up momentum. No one was more fun to watch than Mirna though.
Once the vats are emptied, the clue on the bottom of the tank sends the teams 50 miles to the town of Petrohue. Where they must find a popular sport place called La Maquina to find the next clue. Unfortunately, team Guido neglects to write down a crucial part of the clue. They missed the name of the town. So, they were just randomly driving looking for a sing that said La Maquina. Some teams asked for directions, some head out on their own and some followed taxis. Luckily for Joe & Bill, they manage to find Charla & Mirna and find out that they were missing an important component to the clue. All of the teams arrive at La Maquina except for Dustin & Kandace. They found a small race flag and followed it instead of the La Maquina sign. (Insert ominous music here).
At La Maquina they find a DETOUR. The two choices they get are Vertical Limit or River Wild. In Vertical Limit, both team members must scale a 40-foot rock wall and get half of the clue. When both halves are appropriated, they can go on. In River Wild, the team must travel back two miles and partake in a river rafting expedition with category 3 and 4 rapids. That would probably mean more to me if I knew what category 3 and 4 rapids meant, but at least I know it doesn't sound easy. When they complete the ride, they will find their next clue. Needless to say, all of the teams choose the rafting instead of the climbing. Dustin & Kandace didn't make it here as they saw the flag for the river rafting and followed it instead. Once the teams have completed the 2.5-mile rafting ride, the clue they get tells them to travel 3.5 miles to find Playa Petrohue. This beach is the Pit Stop for this leg of the race.
The racers arrive at the Pit Stop in the following order:
1. Rob & Amber (who won home gyms)
2. Uchenna & Joyce
3. Eric & Danielle
4. Dustin & Kandace (When they checked in, Phil told them they were missing a clue and he could not check them in until they had all their clues. They backtracked and found it. Luckily for them, no one else had checked in during the time they looked for the missing clue.)
5. Oswald & Danny
6. Teri & Ian (in spite of the fact that Teri fell off the raft during the ride)
7. Joe & Bill
8. Charla & Mirna
9. David & Mary
Yes, my favorite team is gone once again. Ah, well, it was not meant to be. Now I have to pick a new favorite team. Tune in next week when we will see Rob & Amber have a confrontation with Charla & Mirna.
Sorry that you are so disappointed. I was bummed last week when David & Mary left. Now we will have to find new teams to root for.
